"There you are." Nurse Jackson scowled at them as they exited the elevator.
"Uh oh."
"uh oh is right." Jackson shook her head. "Jordi you should be getting changed. They're going to be here any minute to take you to the OR.
"And Charlie's parents are waiting."
Kara pulled out her phone. "One last shot."
"Kara."
"Oh come on Nurse Jackson, one photo." Kara held out her phone.
"Please."
"Charlie just said please. I did hear that?"
"Yeah." Leo nodded. "You heard that."
"Doesn't that earn a photo?" Emma smiled. "To commemorate this exciting moment."
Nurse Jackson held out her hand. "ONE photo."
She quickly snapped the shot and handed Kara back her phone.
Jordi gave Charlie a hug. "t's a little weird doing surgery and you won't be there."
"You'll be okay."
"I know. But it's still weird. We never played that game of checkers."
"I still have to come for rehab. I'll come see you."
"I can't wait."
Jordi stood in the doorway and watched the others giving Charlie hugs. He watched Leo and Nurse Jackson walk away with Charlie.
"Pretty awesome, Charlie talking like that." Dash plopped down on the loveseat.
"Yeah. super awesome." Jordi laughed. He stripped off his shirt and slipped on the gown.
"I ever tell you that I had a dream about Charlie once."
"No." Jordi pulled off his sneakers.
"Yeah. I had this crazy bad attack, totally couldn't breathe."
"Wow."
"They had to put this tube down into my lungs and suck the gunk out. When they put me under, I was the lobby. There were no people. Just these two chairs and this little table and this kid in these blue pajamas."
"Playing Checkers?"
"Jenga. Kid totally kicked my ass."
"Jordi. You ready?" Kenji stood in the doorway.
"Kick butt, J-Man." Dash gave him a fist bump. "I'll come see ya in the morning."
"Thanks. But I'm going to be knocked out for a while. I'd rather you stay with Leo."
"You sure?"
"Yeah."
"Okay dude."
Jordi sat down in the wheelchair. "You know, I could walk."
"It's the rule."
"It's a stupid rule."
"Yeah, but a lot of rules are stupid. We still have to follow them."
"At least they didn't send a gurney. That was really lame."
"Not as bad ass. Not like those jalapeƱo pepper shorts you're sporting."
"They were a gift from my abuela."
"Hey Kenji." Dr McAndrew was waiting for them when they got off the elevator.
"Doc."
"Jordi. You ready for this?"
"Yeah."
"You're sure? There's still time to change your mind."
"We don't have to do the full surgery."
"We don't?"
"No."
"But I thought the chemo wasn't working fast enough."
"It's not. But we could try other stronger drugs."
"Didn't you say the drugs could have really bad effects?"
"They could. But we could reduce those effects with a partial surgery. Removing part of the tumors would help the drugs be more effective. It's not the typical method but it's an option I'm willing to try."
"So what do we do?"
"What do you want to do?"
Jordi took a breath. "I'm sure." He hopped up on the gurney. "All the way."
