THE VAMPIRE CHRONICLES

CHAPTER 1: Attacked

"Bye Val!"I said as her door closed behind me. I ran across her short driveway and slowed down as my feet hid the concrete sidewalk. I glanced at my watch and saw that it was already nine in the night. I picked up the pace and jogged through the road with only the dim lights of the street lamps illuminating the way.

I knew my aunt was going to freak that I'm late but I still felt the need to run slowly. Plus, my house was only a few (a lot) blocks away… Valentina had told me to watch my back while going home. In Italy, anything could happen…

When I was only 15 blocks away, the street lamps flickered and died. I fumbled inside my small satchel and pulled out a flashlight. Gosh! I just remembered! This thing could die any second! Better use it while I can…

I turned it on and a dim light appeared out of it. While walking slowly, my foot bumped against something. I turned the flashlight on it and saw that it was a small black kitten with piercing green eyes.

It meowed pitifully and scrambled off toward a nearby alley. I love kittens! My aunt does too! Maybe I could take the poor thing home… It doesn't even have a mom to look after it… I smiled to myself and headed into the alley. As soon as I entered the alley, the flashlight died. I shook the flashlight but it didn't light.

I sighed. I'll just look for a pair of bright green eyes, if not,I'm just going to go. "Little kitten? Where are you?" I heard my voice, muffled by fright. Then , my searching hands touched a wall. Great. A dead end.

I was just about to turn when I heard a swish from somewhere behind me. Then, I felt a slight pressure on my arm. It felt strangely cold…

Then, all of a sudden, I was pulled as the pressure tightened on my arm and the next thing I knew, my back was pressed against the brick wall to the left of where I was before.

A figure stood before me, shadowing me. It wasn't very taller than me. My vision wasn't very clear. My eyes were clouded and I didn't put in effort to clear my vision because of the searing pain originating from my arm.

I glanced down and vaguely noticed four bloody slashes and a hand gripping the space below it. Everything except my wounds was numb and I felt faint…

Then, the figure's eyes opened and the first thing I noticed were that his irises were blood-red. He-not it- took a deep breath as if breathing me and my exposed blood in. He opened his mouth and I saw two menacing blood-stained fangs sticking out. I winced mentally. Then, in a quick and fluid motion, his head relocated itself to just inches from my throat.

All that time, I knew I was going to die so I looked back through all my past memories before the vampire before me silenced me forever. I knew it was silly but in my position, anyone would cherish this moment. I truly wanted to sceam…

The vampire's head turned slightly and his eyes focused on mine. Then, his eyes turned from vicious and bloodthirsty to … pity and sympathy. I relaxed , knowing, for the moment, I was safe.

He must have recognized the instant relief in my eyes because he snarled and jumped up. He disappeared into the creepy shadows above.

I felt so limp. Weak. I fell on my knees, my eyes not moving from the brick wall in front of me. I heard a deep grumbling sound from above me. I with a tremendous amount of force, shifted from my position to move a little to the right and…BOOM! ... A chunk of stone fell right on the spot I was before.

Phew! I thought. I scrambled up ungracefully and ran out of the accursed alleyway. As I ran, I remembered that there was a taxi stand a few blocks more, yes a taxi stand. Weirdly…
