This popped into my head literally minutes before I fell asleep last night. I scribbled the idea on the paper, and it just flowed back to me. It's sort of a drabble, not quite enough for a one-shot.
Disclaimer: I don't own a thing.
I just needed the usual from the store. Milk, check. Paper towel, check. Doritos, check. Bananas, check. Peanut butter, check. All that was left on my mini-shopping trip was wheat bread. I walked over to where the break was. There was a tall-ish guy looking at the bread selection as well. I looked him over. He looked cute, in a semi-familiar way. I smiled. He looked at me. I saw it in his eyes. I knew him.
"Oh my god, hey," I said, looking directly at him. He looked me over, a little confused. I felt so ridiculous.
He cleared his throat, "Hey," accommodated with a creepy look. I knew I had scared the poor kid. But, I could have sworn I knew him.
"Do you remember me?" Was spilling out of my mouth before I could fully grasp how much this guy was weirded out.
"Nope," He said, after a few awkward moments he added, in a tentative voice, "Should I?"
"Uhm…I guess not. Sorry. You just look like someone I knew," I said, as I grabbed any bread from the shelf and started to walk away with my basket of items. I was so embarrassed.
"Who?" He asked, stopping me in my tracks. I turned on my heel to face him. I bit my lip, and took the plunge.
"This is gonna sound silly," I warned him, as he just smiled it off, "But, Nate Gray."
There I said it, I finally thought. This guy is either going to be happy to be compared to a celebrity, or not know who he is. Either way it wasn't looking too good.
"Oh, well, I get that a lot," I said, feeling a little relieved; he knew who Nate was, but wasn't all cocky about it, "I'm his little brother."
"Wow," I said, considering when I knew Nate his little brother was just a kid. I mean, this was obviously a man. Now, I felt a little preposterous again. He told me something relatively big and all I could come up with was Wow. I was pathetic.
"Yea," The guy, I was blanking on his name at the moment, but it's Gabriel, said. The both of us just stood there, the missing link between a broken relationship. He shifted the weight onto his other foot, "So, who are you?"
"Caitlyn Gellar," I mumbled, hoping he wouldn't tell Nate. We hadn't spoken in so long, and it was a messy breakup. I wished I had never gone to the store today. The entire list could have waited.
"I'll tell him I ran into you today," Gabriel said, as I winced. The one thing I was hoping he wouldn't do. But, I put on a fake smile and prayed I could get through the day.
"Thanks," I said, with my fake smile, as I went to walk away. I could feel my cheeks heating up. Anywhere but here would be a nice alternative.
"Do you want me to, err, have you call him or something?" Gabriel asked, again stopping me. I looked over my shoulder back at where Gabriel was standing with his hands shoved into his coat pockets. I shrugged my shoulders.
"Sure," I said. But, I highly doubt Nate would have kept my number. Just because I did, didn't mean a damn thing.
But, lo-and-behold I got a call later that night from the one and only Nate. We started talking, fell madly in love, and had you.
I booped her nose, as she snuggled further into her covers. She was drifting asleep from one of her favorite bedtime stories.
"Tell it again," She softly pleaded. I laughed, and tucked her in.
"Not tonight, tomorrow," I said, planting a soft kiss on her forehead. I turned off her bedside light, and saw Nate's silhouette in the doorway. I walked straight into his arms, closing the door behind us.
Take it however you want it. I personally kind of liked it. The green button is your friend.
