Escaping Lucius Malfoy

"Draco, think about the decision you are making. It's a serious and dangerous commitment, dangerous especially for you," Severus said, looking around as if he expected someone to be eavesdropping, even though they were under the Quidditch stands, and the field was abandoned.

"I'm not afraid of him, Professor. I'm eighteen; this is my last year at Hogwarts. He can't control me anymore," Draco replied. Severus looked at the young man, tall and lithe, fire in his eyes. For years he had watched Draco's desire to escape his father's hold on him, his influence. But the boy could be paying for his independence with his life.

"You won't be accepted by them, you know that. They aren't going to readily let you join their ranks just because you say you believe what they do-"

"But I do believe it, sir!" Draco interrupted.

"How easily love can change a person's views," Severus thought, "That Weasley girl definetly transformed him somehow,"

"I know you do, Draco," he said out loud, "However, I know from experience that no matter how pure your intentions may be, once you have shown any sign of associating with their enemies, they will never accept you."

The pair stood in silence for a few moments, and then Severus said with quietly, "Your father will come after you. He'll try to kill you."

"I'd rather die by his hand than be ruled by it." Severus' eyes met Draco's. Seeing no doubt there, no thought of backing down, Severus sighed.

"I'll talk to Dumbledore tonight," he said, and Draco nodded. The pair walked off toward the castle together in silence.
