Near prodded his lunch distastefully, he wasn't exactly a fan of macaroni...

With a small sigh, he placed his fork down on the table, resting his chin in his hand. He looked sadly around the lunchroom. The other children were always laughing, talking, and playing with friends.. Near never had any real friends. He was always the 'smart one', the one who did better over everyone else. None of the other children ever paid any attention to him. When they did however, it was only to bully him or to congratulate him about his high test scores.

Near sighed again, slowly spinning the straw around in his glass of milk.

"Near!"

The boy looked up, startled. Someone was coming to talk? To him? He faced the direction his name had been called, confused.

..Mello?

Mello walked casually over to him, grinning. He looked over his shoulder once, before sitting on the stool next to the smaller boy. Near looked up at him, eyes questioning. Was he pretending to be nice so he could do something embarrassing to him? Or was he actually going to talk to him?

He blinked, "Yes, Mello?"

"Oh nothing, just thought I'd come and talk to you for a little while. You look so lonely all the time.." Mello smirked, glancing at one of his friends while Near kept his eyes fixed shyly on his lunch, obviously not noticing what the other boy had planned.

"Oh...well..I-" Near gasped as Mello forcefully shoved his face into his forgotten lunch. Afterwards, he slowly brought his head up and looked wide-eyed at the blonde, who was now clutching his stomach from laughing so hard. The other children seated close by were also joining in on poking fun at Near, who had started to slowly wipe his face. Once he cleaned his face free of everything, he stood and sadly walked from the lunchroom.

Once in the hall and away from the laughter, he broke into a sprint, racing to the empty playroom with unshed tears glistening in his eyes. Once inside, he locked the door behind him, sliding to the floor and hugging his knees. Why did this always happen to him? Why did everyone at the orphanage seem to dislike him so much?

He sniffled, wiping his eyes and crawling over to a discarded teddy bear that he'd never noticed before. He picked it up as if it were made of glass, his small fingers softly caressing it's fur and round eyes. It was like him. Never noticed or cared about, just thrown away in a corner. All alone, with no one to play with or be it's friend. Near's lips curved up into a small smile, sniffling again.

He stood, shuffling over to the puzzle he'd been working on before lunch, bringing his new friend with him.
