A/N: This is just a little break off of Mists of Time. I decided to try a little one-shot because I bought a new song and it is absolutely amazing! This story was inspired by If Everyone Cared by Nickelback.
Summary: Optimus Prime is dead and the Decepticons have enslaved the humans. Jack and Miko think about what could have been.
Pairings: Jack/Miko with some mentions of Jack/Sierra
Stars are such beautiful and innocent little things. Their only job is to glitter in the sky, peppering it with twinkling little lights. They bring happiness and hope. At least, they used to.
Now, the stars represent mystery and danger. They bring sadness and fear, and wariness of what is beyond our little planet.
Jack and Miko lay beneath a few weeping willow trees, gazing at the stars wearily. Jack was now twenty-four years old, and Miko was twenty-three. They had both had their share of death and destruction. Not long after Optimus Prime's death, Washington D.C. had been destroyed, along with Agent William Fowler and Nurse June Darby. Jack's first girlfriend, Sierra, had also been killed later on - protecting Jack with her own life.
Now, Miko was Jack's girlfriend. They were at the graveyard where June, William, and Sierra had been buried. Fireflies danced around them like city lights, oblivious to the world's peril.
"Hey, isn't that some long lost satellite?" Miko suddenly asked, trying to cheer Jack up as she pointed to a twinkling light that seemed to be moving, at least to her tired eyes.
"No, Miko, that's just a star," was the reply.
One by one, the Autobots had been picked off. Smokescreen and Bumblebee were the first to be terminated. They were on a scouting mission, and were ambushed. They were unable to call for backup, and were mobbed by the 'Cons. Next had been Bulkhead, Wheeljack, and Arcee. Bulkhead had been terminated first, and Wheeljack was terminated while protecting Arcee. Ultra Magnus had managed to escape, but not without injury. Later, he was captured, and was never heard from again. Ratchet was the only one left. Sometimes, Jack felt like the medic blamed himself for their failure.
"Jack-"
"Don't, Miko. Just…don't."
Miko scooted closer to Jack. "You know, you can always tell me anything, Jack. I'm here for you," she said, laying a hand on his own.
Jack let out a hoarse laugh. "Alright, Miko. I need to ask you a question. What is your idea of a perfect world?"
Miko thought for a minute, then glanced back at Jack. "A world where everyone cared. A place where everybody shared, and swallowed their pride. No one cried, and no one lied. A place…where everyone loved."
Jack smiled, then turned to Miko. "You know…if they could love like you and me, I wonder how the world would be."
"That, Jack, would be the day that nobody died."
