He was never a killer before he found it. The thing that started it all.
The Death Note wasn't God's will, nor was it his. It was the paper to write on, it had the powers, but without the user, it was useless. The Shinigami used it to prolong their life, but why did they need it? The action had gotten repetitive, and boring. Writing in names was a chore.
He had memorized all the rules to make sure his plan would work.
Only 6 were allowed into the human world at once.
He only needed 3.
Ryuk wanted excitement, and he gave it to him.
In exchange, he made sure it all worked out in the end.
It was risky. If it failed, he would be sentenced, sent to jail, and never see the light of day anyway.
Even if it did work, he would still die. It didn't matter. He wouldn't get recognized for it, and no one would know he was connected to it in any case.
He started the global fear of the Death Note, all by finding it by the swings. He had mistaken it for a journal, as he was unemployed and drunk. Drinking 4 bottles of beer does that to a person. He could never do it. He could drink as many bottles of alcohol as he wanted, but he would never be able to. He could plan all he wanted, but could never act it out.
Until he thought about someone else doing it all for him.
Drop it by a high school. Make sure a boy finds it, and tell him the rules and consequences. With any luck, it'll all work out. If you nudge him in the right direction, it'll all work out. You'll get what you want Ryuk. You will. I promise.
That's what he told the Shinigami when he met him. After months of meticulous planning, he was ready. Ready for the day that would change the world. Slowly of course, but the world would change nonetheless.
They didn't know what hit them. Kurou Otoharada made sure of that. And laughed all the way to his grave.
