The First Family Eve

Lights set to low, the garlands hanging in the archways, and a blanket to snuggle under. The best Squidmas Eve ever.

Surprisingly, the children were all calm and peaceful. Sure, it was only Squidmas Eve, but I was expecting them to be tugging at the gifts under the tree. It was nice, snuggled up with my wife and kids in front of the fireplace, watching Callie and Marie's Squidmas special at low volume, and a nice, warm air to the environment.

"I like this... I think it would be better if we had one more thing..." Vybe whispered into my ear. She pushed a button, and a single bit of mistletoe was lowered to just over our heads.

"Oh you... Come here." I mumbled playfully. We kissed each other. After what felt like a while, I felt something lifted off my head. I broke away and patted my head.

"You took my hat." I said. She put the Santa hat on her own head and snuggled back up, leaning on me. We continue watching the special until I hear a faint snoring coming from Vybe. I continued to watch the squishies as they slowly started falling asleep. One by one, the three of them drifted off to dreams unknown, snoozing on our laps.

Eventually, I dozed off as well.

Waking up, it was rather cold in the apartment. None of the lights were on either. There must be at least two feet of snow outside. Vybe and the squishies are still asleep, but I can tell Vybe's stirring.

"Morning..." I mumbled. Vybe just kind of snuggled closer to me. "It's kind of cold in here... Isn't it?" Vybe just nodded her head.

"Don't get up..." Vybe moaned. "I just want you for my own right now..."

"I think the power is out." I said, looking around.

"That's normal... Just go back to-" Vybe snapped up immediately. "Wait, the power is out?"

"Yes, it is." I said. I put the squishies on Vybe, got out of the blanket, and walked over to the fireplace, re-lighting it. "I'm not sure why though..."

"Me neither..." Vybe said. I walk into the kitchen and get a strange black kettle with a hook on it. I walk over to the fire and put the kettle over it. "What are you doing?"

"Making breakfast." I said. I get some water, pour it into the kettle, and let it boil for a bit. I then take some vegetables and different varieties of fish and put them in as well. I then put the lid on it and let it simmer.

"What kind of breakfast is that?" Vybe asked, leaning closer.

"A morning stew my mom used to make." I responded. I opened the lid and put some spices into it. I then take a spoon and stir it gently.

"Mauuu!~" I hear from behind me. I turn around and Hikari had woken up. She was staring at me with curious eyes. The other two boys were still asleep. Vybe picked her up and snuggled with her while I cooked. Eventually, it smelled just right, and I took the kettle out of the fire place. I placed it on the rug and I walked to the kitchen and grabbed some bowls and spoons.

"Well... This Squidmas morning was... Interesting." Vybe said. Almost instantly, the other two squishies woke up with a loud "Mau!~"

"Well good morning, squirts!" I said, pouring some stew into the bowls. I gave one to each of them, and they started eating it up like crazy. "You really like it, do you?" I asked, rubbing them to make them burp a little. Vybe was smiling as she ate hers.

"Honey, I have to say... Despite the difficulties this morning, this is the best Squidmas ever." Vybe said.

"Thank you." I responded, kissing her cheek and watching the squishies began trying to squirm to the presents. "Who's ready for gifts?!"
