A/N: I loved 'Human Nature/The Family of Blood'. I thought they really showcased David Tennant's acting abilities, as well as the huge potential of the Doctor Who universe. Joan Redfern, who was in love with the Doctor's human self, really got my sympathy but also my admiration. She was really very selfless and brave as she encouraged John Smith to do what he had to do. We learn in 'The End of Time part 2' that Joan eventually remarried and that she was happy, so I came up with this freeform poem as something it seems like she might have thought when she fell in love again. Please read and enjoy, and constructive criticism is always welcome.
It's been only a year since he left me,
And only a month since you've come,
And I feel like a traitor for the feelings that I have
For you.
But John Smith is gone
And it's time to move on.
You remind me so much of him
That I can't help being afraid
That just like him you'll be leaving soon,
And leaving my heart torn again.
Can I trust you, can I be sure
That you are you, and that you'll be the same
Forever?
I never thought that a man would look at me
As John Smith did;
And you aren't John,
But perhaps that's good.
You're just a plain country man,
With no extraordinary talents, no impossible dreams.
You don't have to save the world
By giving up your life,
You don't have a friend
Who wants to take you away.
There's just me
And just you
And together we might find
Something of that life that the Doctor could never have
Something of that happiness while he roams the stars.
And I think, I think, perhaps I'm right
That in the end,
We'll be happier than he.
But I'll never forget him, I'll always remember
That man, that wonderful man,
Who swept me off my feet, and looked at me in that special way,
And gave me a journal
That I'll always keep.
