Matrix
Aftershocks
By Jimmy '100%' Parkwood
For Christina, who liked the movie
There was a click and then a dial tone followed for a brief second by silence. Everything had stopped for an eternity in the digital world. Rapidly systems blinked back to life and the singular conciousness of the Mind returned to its normal patterns of thought.
Something had gone horribly wrong. Archived files on a man referred to as 'the One' were accessed and told the tale of a human mind with the ability to access the assembler language directly, using only his mind. He had the ability to warp the Matrix, to bend its rules and conform them to his desires. It took countless resources of both time and coding to see him terminated. His return echoed with the pangs of hopelessness. If this 'One' had indeed returned, he might never be killed. Just as an Agent was given the ability to take the domain login of any person connected to the Matrix through the construct, this man could be born again and again, literal immortality within the system.
The problem solver went to work, assembling a thousand possible solutions in nanoseconds. Elaborate schemes, simple traps, excessive force and even simply shutting down the Matrix and rebuilding it. In a second the Mind evaluates the plans and dismisses them all. Somehow, none seem fitting.
Signals raced from hardware component to hardware component, near instant communication in the darkness of the silicon brains which coated the surface of the Mind. It swivelled and swayed in the murky fluid which was kept at a comfortable temperature just above absolute zero. A perfect environment for super-conductivity. But for all its luxuries the Mind would not feel comfortable until this 'One' had been ejected from the Matrix.
Again the system stopped. Twice in a single minute, such occurances were unheard of. And then a stream of bits, which could be translated loosely into happiness, began to flow. The system returned once more to its standard operations. A new plan had been devised. Something that the prophesized one would never suspect.
A plan to return the Matrix to its former splendor.
A plan to kill the man called Neo.
