I felt it…cold, harsh, and sharp…I tasted the maniacally laughing man's sword that was now sliding into my lower right quadrant; it was the harsh reality that would be my end. "I chose this…I chose to protect you…I didn't want you to get hurt!" I heard those phrases scream in my mind as the man pulled his unforgiving sword away from me; I was trying to telepathically tell him that everything would be okay. Without warning I heard a war cry from behind me and his strong arm circle around my waist, making me wince at the searing pain that was now climbing to every corner of my nervous system, with the strength of ten men he swung me behind him and I heard the clash and clang from the two men's swords. He let go of my waist and I collapsed to my knees, I was beginning to fade fast, my vision was becoming blurred; the two men fought and danced but he was faster.
With god-like speed he sent his opponent's sword flying behind him to land in the ground fifty feet away, the man collapsed to his knees and the other raised his sword above him, "I should end your life…but I am no longer the Battosai that was in the revolution ten years ago. You will pay for what you have done to Miss Kaoru!" Before he could swing I mustered everything to scream, "NOOOO KENSHIN!" Kenshin's sword stopped millimeters from the man's head, "Letting a female tell you what to do now Battosai?" With no need for approval from me, he knocked out the man that had run me through. My arm gave out beneath me, my right one was trying to staunch the bleeding that had now soaked through the cloth of my gi and hakama; I fell to the ground I looked toward the man standing a few feet away. That red hair bound into a ponytail, face hidden by his thick hair and only showing the "x" shaped scar on his right cheek, I reached trying anything to grasp him. The last vision I had of him…my Kenshin…I saw his violet eyes so riddled with pain and sorrow, "Kaoru-dono…please just stay with me…Please stay for me…" I smiled and said his name so softly "Kenshin…" placing my hand upon his cheek "I am sorry that I didn't get to kiss you and erase that scar that has burdened your heart…" I thought to myself instead I whispered, "I love you".
There in the dojo's yard Kenshin watched the life fade out of the woman that had taken him in, given him a home, and also given him the salvation of her love. He felt the tears begin to stream from his eyes, "Kaoru…please don't leave me" he hugged her limp body so tight to his, feeling the blood soak through his gi, he could smell the scent of copper mixed with the cherry blossoms that had begun to fall around the two of them. He raised his head to the sky and began to cry out her name, cry out to the gods asking for a bargain; anything to have her live. When Yahiko and Sanoske arrived at the scene, both man and child collapsed next to Kenshin taking in the sight of their friend lying lifeless in a crushed wanderer's arms; this horrific and sorrowful scene would write the hands of fate for two lovers long before Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet.
