Let Them Be
G
Veronica/Duncan, Lilly/Logan, appearances by Celeste, Jake, and Keith
Note: Originally written for a fic challenge. Did a little adjusting to a flashback in 1x04, The Wrath of Con. Thanks to picklepocket for use of her transcripts.
Summary: Lilly changes Celeste's mind about telling Duncan about Veronica's questionable paternity.
Jake and Celeste Kane both sighed in what Keith assumed was relief as their hired limo turned into the circular and ridiculously ornate driveway in from of the Kane estate. Keith hid a smile as the kids tumbled out of the limo, obviously a little drunk, but none obviously hurt.
Lilly limped over to Keith, sensing his less uptight demeanor.
"What seems to be the problem, officer?" She asked as the Kanes advanced.
"Lilly!" Celeste cried, exasperated. "Are you drunk?"
As Lilly and her mother fought, Veronica stole a glance at her father. Before holding his gaze too long, Veronica was interrupted as Duncan spoke up in his sister's defense.
"It's my fault! It was my idea!" Duncan declared.
Jake made his way over to Duncan and steered him towards the door.
"Both of you, inside the house. Come on." Jake said, tossing an aggravated glance at the his arguing wife and daughter.
Lilly glared at both her mother and her father as she deliberately made her way over to Logan and gave him a long, hard kiss. Jake let go of Duncan's shoulders in surprise and Duncan slyly made his way back over to Veronica.
Celeste spun around and made her way to the house while Jake shepherded his daughter in the same direction.
Duncan lowered his head and nuzzled Veronica's neck while his parents were distracted.
"Sorry about this. I'll call you later." He turned around and waved as he made his way towards the front door as well.
As Celeste watched this exchange from the inside foyer, her blood began to boil all over again. Not only had her children been out all night, obviously drinking; they showed less than no remorse! And Duncan was obviously as enamored with Veronica Mars as ever.
"Mom," Lilly said as her father waited for Duncan just outside the door.
Celeste turned her steely gaze to Lilly.
"Just let them be. It's not like they're getting married. They haven't even had sex yet." Lilly proclaimed.
"Lillian!" Celeste exclaimed, taken aback by the reasoning her daughter used.
"Mom, he's still your golden boy. Veronica isn't some sort of distraction. They're good together. Just let them be." She explained, emphasizing her point.
Celeste simply stared at Lilly until Lilly leaned in closer.
"I know your secret." She hissed. "But you don't even know for sure, so at least make sure you're one hundred percent right before you put them—and Dad—through such a scandal."
Jake and Duncan finally joined the mother and daughter standing in the foyer. Jake and Celeste exchanged a look before Jake spoke.
"Go sleep it off. We will all talk later tonight."
Duncan and Lilly both made their way to their rooms as Jake tried to put his arms around his wife's shoulders, only to have her go limp and walk in the opposite direction of Duncan and Lilly's bedroom.
Unaware of the scene going on inside the Kane home, Veronica looked sheepishly at her dad as he followed Logan back to his car.
"Sorry, Dad."
