Summary: They both have things to be sorry about.
Duncan opens the hospital door quietly and slips in to sit next to the seemingly sleeping figure in the cot-like hospital bed.
His eyes are closed, and he looks almost peaceful, like Duncan hasn't seen him since Lilly's death; but the bruises and cuts on his face make Duncan think otherwise.
Duncan's made at himself for not seeing the signs. Sure, his parents had drugged him and he has that epilepsy thing, but he's still a human being. And he's known the guy in the hospital bed almost as long as he has known his own mother.
But girls got in the way. Logan started dating Lilly. Duncan's sister. He's not completely oblivious; he knows that Lilly lost her virginity long before she started dating Logan. He knows because she told him. And then Duncan started dating Veronica and the four of them were like this incredible unstoppable force. Neptune High royalty.
Then Lilly died. Duncan knows he will probably never get those three days of his life, from the time he found her dead until the day after the funeral, back. He knows he will never get the year and a half of wanting Veronica but not being able to have her back.
Logan was hurting and Duncan couldn't see it. He'll never be able to fix that. But he's going to try his damnedest to help him now.
As Duncan slowly exhales a breath he didn't even know he was holding, Logan's eyes flutter open.
"Hey, man," Logan croaks, struggling to sit up and failing.
"So—did they tell you?"
"About my dad? Weevil did when he found me. And then I tried to pick a fight. I was a little drunk." Logan chuckled, then winced in pain.
"Listen, I'm sorry about—"
"Man, forget it. We've both done shit we shouldn't have." Logan cut Duncan off. "My most recent being trying to take Weevil's bike."
"Not the best move, man," Duncan replied, laughing.
"I know. And I might be in here awhile, so I'm going to need you to sneak some real food in."
Duncan nodded and smiled down at his friend. As Logan turned on the TV mounted across the room, Duncan knew that he couldn't go back in time, but somehow he decided he didn't need to.
