Comforting the Blind

He just stood there.

It was eerie and heartbreaking at the same time. Such quiet and stillness for that long made somebody wonder what went wrong. He stares up blankly, guilt stricken, blaming himself for everything that happened in that painfully long year.

He sees nothing, for he is blind. Though, it is always reassuring that there is something there in front of him, especially something he was all-too familiar with.

Naminé stood in the doorway, her white dress camouflaged by the even whiter room. It was painful to see him like this, listless and blank, his features unreadable and enigmatic. He seemed content enough in that stoic stance, unmoving for so long that it began to get disturbing to the supposedly-emotionless girl. For nearly two hours now, he just stood there, waiting as patiently as possible for a sign, if any, of change in his best friend's sleeping pattern.

She watched him intently, wondering when he would turn around, and let himself walk away from this memory. But even more time went by, and he didn't budge.

He had done this on numerous occasions, when he was sure that he would not be bothered by any outside forces that may have burdened him. Unannounced to him, Naminé was watching him, an expression that of the purest concern. Inept of the knowledge of the presence behind him, whether it be from not caring or just from exhaustion, he continued to stand there as still as a statue.

Suddenly, he begins to sway. She wonders when he last able to sleep, as he fights to keep his ground and attempts to shake the sensation out of his body. It's just past midnight, and Naminé begins to feel the burden of fatigue plaguing her own small body.

Thinking long and hard, she scuttles out of the doorway and past the wondrous spectacle of DiZ's computers. Climbing up the stairs of the hidden room and walking briskly out of the library, she shut the door behind her as she glanced at her own room and smiled.

Opening the door, she looked towards the window of the ghostly white area she called her own and eyed the items she sought. Sweeping them up quickly and shaking a stray hair out of her face, she walked at a more normal pace this time as she quietly shut the door behind her.

Walking back to his location, Naminé gasped. He had collapsed onto the ground during her short absence and was now on his back. He was absolutely exhausted, so it was no wonder why this had happened!

Sighing, Naminé tip-toed over to him quietly, and instead of seeing a pair of peacefully closed eyes, she was met with a haunting black band, a blindfold. So many times she wanted to see him without it, but her dream was always short-lived as she remembered DiZ telling her of the consequences of seeing those beautiful aqua eyes. If he were not blind, there would be no stopping the monster inside of him from showing up again.

Gingerly, she placed the blanket that she kept in her room for herself over his body, trying her hardest not to wake him from his much-needed sleep. Following through with her gesture, she gently lifted his head and placed her only pillow softly under it.

She tucked the blanket tightly around his body and smiled contentedly, satisfied with her work. When she was sure that she made him as comfortable as she could, Naminé walked silently out of the room, and let the door slide shut behind her.

Next morning, Riku would return the blanket and pillow with a nod and rare smile.

In a few more nights, Naminé would cover him again.

And that next morning, Riku would return the blanket and pillow again.

Little did they know, it would cycle into something close to commonplace without them realizing it.

She enjoyed comforting the blind more than anything now.

And this was not the first time, and will not be the final time.
