"Put your back into it"
I glared at him. Of course, being Nick, he was saying it in good humor. But still… that cocky little grin made me want to slap him… or kiss him. I wasn't exactly sure. Then again, I'm not exactly what you would call "stable". Maybe I feel this way about Nick only because I've given up on Grissom… or maybe I'm just realizing what my heart has felt these last few years.
"Do you wanna come up here and try?"
"Do you wanna come back here and make me?" Again with that damn smile…
"Do you want me to?" He grinned, blushing a little.
"You always have a comeback for everything I say, Sara."
"And I always will Nick…" I got back to work at fingerprinting the dash. Nick and I were in the suspects car… together… alone. I felt my heart jump a little as my mind started going wild with the possibilities. I tried to focus on the fingerprints, but all I could see was Nick kissing me gently on the neck. Shivers ran down my spine.
"Hey." I didn't turn; I knew Nick was right behind me, watching me freeze up like a lunatic. I could feel his breath on the back of my head; it was almost more than I could stand. I made sure I was a safe distance from those soft-looking lips before I turned to face him.
"Yeah?"
"You almost done with the dash?"
"Nick, just because you finish everything first all the time doesn't mean I have to do the same!" He backed off a little, holding his hands up in surrender. I felt a little guilty, although I knew Nick would forget about it in just a few seconds. The dash was now complete. I sat back to admire my work and ended up falling into the back seat; to be more specific, into Nicks' lap. I looked up at him; he was smiling at me, and just that made my heart go wild. Disgusted with myself, I sat up. He was still looking at me thoughtfully.
"Nick, I…"
"You say you have a comeback for everything?"
"Of course." I didn't, and he probably knew that, but it was always good to keep him in check. He moved closer to me, and I let my eyes flutter shut as a reflex; I'd done that so many times in my dreams it was automatic for me. Cursing myself, I snapped them open again, staring into his beautiful eyes. He looked a little hesitant.
"Well, let's see you come up with one for… this." He leaned closer until he had closed the gap between up. Our lips touched gently. It felt like my heart was going to burst out of my chest. I stayed like that for a while, closer to Nick than I ever had been. He pulled away slowly, and I searched his face for any regret; I found none. I had been so caught up in the moment that as I leaned in for more, Nick gently put a finger to my lips and stopped me.
"Well… what about that comeback, Sara Sidle?"
Needless to say, I was frozen to the spot. I couldn't believe that after what seemed like a lifetime, he was finally realizing how much he meant to me. Of course I didn't have a comeback for that, and the smirk on his face told me that he knew so.
Grinning impishly as he came in for another kiss, he whispered into my ear.
"What did you say?"
