She runs. As fast as she can, she runs. Trying to outrun something she can't escape. She reaches her special spot and she stops, out of breath. He is there and he speaks to her...
"What are you running from?" he asks.
"My life" she answers, climbing up onto the short stonewall in front of her. She stares at the water rushing below her.
"You think that's the way to outrun it? To leave it behind?" he asks quietly.
"It's the only way I know" she replies.
"What about your dreams?" he demands
"They're dead," she says, focusing her empty blue eyes on his.
"The world needs you" he says looking deep into her eyes as if searching for her damaged soul, but she locked it away inside.
"No, it doesn't. I'm a waste of space," she answers, "The world turns and life goes on, just without me" She turns her eyes back to the water, a single tear slides down her cheek and she sets one foot off of the edge.
"One life, my life...doesn't matter," she says closing her eyes, her other foot following the first. Images of family, friends, loves, and hates flash through her mind and his face was the image that had lingered.
"I'm sorry," she thinks as she falls. She can feel the wind rushing past her ears and the blood rushing in her veins. At once it all stops, she's frozen in mid air. She slowly opens her eyes...
He has her by the hand, a hand she didn't even realize she had extended. She was hanging 100 feet above the water, the same water she wanted to lose herself in.
"That one life, your life...matters! It matters to ME!" he says with angry tears falling from his eyes wetting her face. At the sight of his tears, the dam inside her breaks and hot tears flow freely from her own eyes. He pulls her up and into his embrace.
"I don't want to die...I just don't know how to go on living" she sobs, burying her head in his chest, wetting his clothing with her tears. He holds her tightly, afraid that he will lose her like he almost did a moment before. She looks up at him, eyes luminous and pleading, still wet with unshed tears.
"Please teach me how to live again"
