Flying High

*this story takes place during the summer after Ginny and Luna left Hogwarts. They are spending the summer at the burrow*

Ginny's POV

"Luna!" I squeak out. "Stop tickling me!" I giggle. Luna laughs, that beautiful musical tinkle. She flops onto the bed.

"You sleep like a log!" She proclaims. "I had to get you up somehow!"

I sigh. "And I could have slept for a million more hours."

"Ok Gin, let's go get breakfast." She says, out of breath.

We head down to the dining room. Giant stacks of pancakes are on the table. I see Dad, Ron, Harry, and George at the table. We sit down and start devouring the steaming pancakes. All the boys are immersed in a conversation about one of Dad's recent cases, and I tune out pretty quickly. "Lu." I interrupt Luna's daydreaming. "What was the last Quibbler about?" I ask. I love listening to her talk about her family's newspaper. Her whole face lights up, and sometimes when she's explaining something, her nose will scrunch up, like a bunny. I laugh internally. I'm hopeless.

After breakfast Luna and I run out to the meadow near The Burrow. During the summer, the meadow is filled with flowers of all kinds. Luna will spend hours and hours just picking flowers in that meadow, humming to herself. I usually bring my broom, and scout from above for the best flower patches. The only time I can get Luna on a broom is on these outings. Sometimes we bring a picnic basket and have lunch.

I swoop down from the cloudless summer sky, startling Luna when I land next to her. "You wanna take a turn?" I ask. She sighs.

"Gin, I've already told you, I don't like going high." She reminds me. "Scourers live in the sky!" She exclaims.

"Aw, c'mon Luna." I protest. "I won't drop you, and we won't go that high." "I promise." Luna sighs. "Fine."

"Yes!" I shout. I pick up my broom. "Ok Lu, just hold my waist." I say. "I'm going to start by hovering, just like last time, ok?" I reassure her. "Let's try to stay up this time." We get on the broom and I kick off. We're hovering maybe ten feet off the ground. I feel a squeeze around my waist and Luna whispers "Ok." "I'm ready." I push forward with my feet and we coast ahead a couple feet. I hear Luna squeak, and I stop. "You ok?" I ask.
"Yeah."

"Ok, let's go." I zoom forward. We're going at a pretty leisurely pace, so I slowly start rising up. I speed up, and soon we're soaring. I whoop and turn around. Luna's eyes are shut tight, but she's beaming. I kick my feet forward, and we slow down. "How's It going?" I shout above the wind whistling through our hair. Luna just laughs in response.

At least ten minutes later, I see the meadow, and The Burrow in the distance. "Ok Lu, we should probably head back." "Mum will be expecting us for lunch."

"But I want to keep flying!" Luna protests. "How come you never told me how incredible this was?" Luna accuses. I look down. I guess it is pretty incredible. The meadow, spotted with patches of bright flowers. The Burrow, with its tall, spindly, uneven towers, shining in the midday sun. To the west, the rolling hills. Luna is right. The view is pretty incredible. "I guess Mum can wait a couple minutes…" I admit. I can only imagine Mum in the kitchen, sighing and laughing to herself, seeing my hand on the clock staying firmly positioned on "in the air".

When we finally find our way back down to the ground, Luna stumbles off the broom. She looks a little dizzy. Her cheeks are flushed and her cat-eye glasses are slipping down her face. I reach over to push them up, and Luna grabs my hands. "Thanks, Gin." "That was incredible." She breathes. I pull her toward me and kiss her. When we pull away she just grins. "Ok Gin, let's go in."
