The Shadow of the Moon

Disclaimer: I do not own any of the seemingly perfect characters of Inuyasha...tear Oh, how I wish I did...

My mind is turning away from you. I don't know why I question your words...I always obeyed you before without hesitation but now, as I age under the light of the full moon, I can't help but ask why you wish for me to follow you. The lord I served under for year..he does not age as I do, and I will soon appear as old as he.

He saved my life when I was a child, but why...and why does he keep me with him? This is all very confusing to me...

"Why" is all I can force myself to ask as he turns his back to me.

" 'Why?' what" he turns to me.

I wish he wouldn't use that tone! A tone with no emotion at all...that dead, monotone voice.

"Why do you keep me here" I ask as the anger in me builds greater"Why? If you don't care"

"Rin, silence this madness..." he replies as if talking to a child.

"Please, my Lord, I am not a child" I exclaim causing him to look back at me.

"Rin, follow me..." his tone is not that of an order but more of a suggestion.

I follow without question as he walks to the edge of the stream. I stop beside him and look out at the flowing water.

"Lord Sesshomaru, why did you bring me back after those wolves..." I ask in a softer tone than before. His eyes change as I say this; my tone probably reminded him of when I was a child.

"You helped me, I was just repaying you..." he replies, staring out at the water"A debt must be paid, no matter how small."

"Yes, but why keep me around"

"That is enough questioning for tonight..." he turns and begins walking, but stops when I don't follow"Are you coming"

"Yes, my Lord..." I say simply and follow just as I always have.

We stop at the area where Jaken is waiting.

"My Lord, My Lord" he yells as we approach"Where were you? You were gone for so long"

I watch as he walks past Jaken without a word, as he usually does, and I too do the same. I retreat to a pond nearby; It's quiet there and I go to be alone or clear my mind. I sit on a boulder beneath the tree that sways in the cool night breeze. The full moon's reflection in the water wrinkles as I run my fingers over the surface. The water is cold, but it doesn't bother me. As the ripples slowly lessen, Sesshomaru's figure appears in the water.

"Rin, why aren't you sleeping" he asks, as I turn to see him behind me.

"I...I'm not tired, my Lord..."

"Stop this" he says in an aggrivated tone"You haven't called me that in years..."

"Why did I stop calling you Lord" I ask, courious about the uniqueness of me.

I have to be unique in some way for him to allow me to call him Sesshomaru.

"Only those who serve me call me Lord..." he says looking away"And you do not serve me."

He always looks away from me.

"Then what is my purpose" I ask, hoping for answers.

"You are here because I wish it..." he says looking at me for the first time since his arival. My face must show my surprize because a small smile crosses his face for a moment...just a moment, but it is enough for now.

"You should sleep now..." he says simply, and I leave him to his thoughts.

I look back and see that he is staying behind before continuing toward the camp.
