Walking from the Annex, Rosemary was very confused. She barely knew who this Giver person was, and now he was claiming to be her father. But… what about the man whom she'd called Father for twelve years? She didn't understand.

She wanted to understand. The memory she received didn't seem that important anymore. The colors that were showing up now… no, not even they were more important than this.

She couldn't tell Father. She couldn't tell anyone, because it was in her rules. She was… she couldn't even describe it. Maybe it would come to her in a later memory. But for now…

Suddenly she heard a loud crash, like the breaking of a fragile object. In fact, as she looked down, she realized that was exactly what it was. There was a liquid on her that appeared blue, and another that appeared red. She couldn't identify either of them.

"I apologize," spoke a soft voice. Rosemary looked up. She knew that face. The boy who was given the Assignment of… Scientist? Yes, it was Scientist. But for some reason, she couldn't recall his name.

"There's no need to worry," he continued. "The serum won't hurt you. And even if it could, it'd have to enter your bloodstream." She didn't understand the terms, but she recalled that was to be expected from him, as he was noticeably smarter than most of the community. But what was his name? It still wouldn't come to her.

A woman who had seen the accident asked if relief-of-pain was necessary. Thinking back to her rules: "unrelated to training", yes it was. So she told them that. And they supplied it, though it took longer to arrive than it had the last time she had needed it. She figured this was just to mark sure the incident was "unrelated to training".

"All right, we'll have you cleaned up in no time," said the woman. "Duncan, you may go now."

Duncan. That was his name. It didn't matter too much, she thought, and she probably would have learned it again anyway had the woman not said it. But it felt right. Duncan. She thought it was a nice name.

Soon she was all washed up and went back to her family unit. But she couldn't stop thinking about what had happened that day. Something about Duncan… something incomprehensible. At least for now.
