Only A Little More Time
By Leah Lestrange
He spoke to them directly not with studied phrases like that of a rehearses Politian but with words that came from his heart. The longer he spoke the more impassioned he became he pleaded, he cajole and finally he commanded. He would never remember exactly that which he had spoken to the broken and demoralises citizens of Racoon City but he would never forget what he felt as he said it. All the passion and fire which had fuelled him during his fight through the zombie infested wasteland of the city came out now. He spoke fervently with no thought of himself but rather with an all consuming belief in what he said and what he believed in.
Beside him his partner edged him on, her body like him wracked with fatigued and wounds from their fight across the city but still she continued to stand beside him and that show of support and unity giving him just one more grasp of hope to hold onto. That desire to protect her had extended far from a simple cops desire to protect an innocent, now it was something so much more.
Leon S Kennedy took in the dishevelled form of Claire Redfield and wondered when she had ever looked so beautiful. The way the speckled light from flaming garbage cans caught the wine-red of her hair. The way she stood with such power and vaguer trying to rally a sense of unity into these hopeless citizens. She was such a formidable woman, the kind of woman he liked.
"The zombies aren't indestructible!" Claire cried to the rapidly disbursing audience. "We can fight them if we only unite!"
"Yeah give them more to feed on when they finally get us!" a seemingly drunken man shouted back as finally without success the small crowd of survivors they had gathered into an alleyway disbursed and went their separate ways.
Claire moaned kicking out at an inoffensive box of garbage which littered the city streets. They had learned to be quiet as noise and scent seemed to be the main attractions for the undead.
Leon wandered over to her and placed a tender hand upon her shoulder.
"We'll be sitting ducks if we stay here any longer; Shelly still got the back entrance covered?"
Claire looked back at him her eyes deep and sorrowful.
"Yeah..."She said in a strangled voice. "She said she'd shout if she saw anything."
Leon's touch was light and unthreatening but there was something intimate in the way he caressed the lightly bandaged wound at her shoulder, a remnant of her run-ins with Mr X.
"You just can't convince some people." Leon said gently as from not to far away the devilish drooling groan of the ghouls split the night. "We better go they may have picked up our scent."
"Leon!" Claire said quickly pulling Leon back out of his stride to stare at her she looked almost embarrassed about something.
"What is it? Let's go!"
"Never mind," Claire said morosely brushing aside a strand of her hair and quickly chasing after Leon "Come on!" Leon and Claire dashed down the back end of the alleyway Shelly quickly taking to their heels as the two adults raised their weapons ready to survive.
"If only they had just a little more time?" Claire thought looking over towards her partner, her heart pounding not from the sense of fear coursing through her, but from something so much more.
