Wedding Bell Blues

Sirius hung back as the crowd made its way from the ceremony space out in the yard and towards the house and hooked his arms with Mrs. P's.

"You're still crying," he noted.

"I'm going to cry all day," she said, wiping her eyes. "Oh, they're just so beautiful, and that was a beautiful wedding…"

"It was," Sirius nodded. He had been to several snuffy Black family weddings, and he could testify that this had been the most fun one yet. He'd even felt something prickle at his eyes when it came time for the vows. "Come on, let's go get you some champagne."

He walked slowly to match her pace, since Mrs. P wasn't exactly getting any younger or any healthier—one of the reasons that Lily and James had moved up the wedding. Still, she gossiped and chattered with more energy than Sirius had seen her muster in a long, long time. Since Mr. P had died, probably.

"It just feels like it happened all so fast…" Mrs. P sighed. "You know, Fleamont and I waited years and years and years to have a child. And then of all a sudden I blinked, and James went from being a little boy dipping his fingers in the jam jar to this handsome young man. And today he looked so smart in his dress robes, and he had so much love in his eyes as he watched Lily walk down the aisle…"

"They grow up so fast," Sirius said.

She didn't pinch his cheek for snark as she was known to do, she just ploughed on.

"…and now he's going on to have his own life… Before I know it Sirius, I'll have grandchildren. Grandchildren! I'll be a grandmother then and I'll have to stop pretending I'm not old."

Sirius laughed.

"Well, at least you've met your daughter-in-law now and you don't have to worry about what James will go out and find," Sirius said.

"Lily's so lovely," Mrs. P said with a fond smile. "I dare say, James might not deserve her…"

"Oh, I'll fully say that he doesn't," Sirius said—which made her laugh.

"You tease him into honesty, dear," Mrs. P. said. "But I've still got some surprise left. You, after all, haven't brought anybody home for me yet... You should get on that, my sweet."

His eyes wandered briefly in Remus' general direction, but he reigned himself back in to Mrs. P's chattering.

"I'm not getting any younger and I'd like to have a better idea of how many grandchildren I should expect…"

Sirius grinned and then looked at her again. "Are you serious, Mrs. P? You worry about that kind of stuff? From me?"

"Of course I do, Sirius Black," Mrs. Potter said. "Stop being ridiculous. Now let's go get that champagne."
