"It's not like he really matters to me. He's just my nerdy brother. Forget I said anything."
Have you ever had somebody who you thought was your friend ditch you?
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
It's not something normal, like forgetting that you were supposed to go to the movies together.
No, it's always something much worse than that.
It's when your sister gets to hang out with the cool kids, and tells them that her nerdy brother means nothing to her.
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
She asks if he could come to the party, but when it finally comes down to whether she'd give up her social status for him, she stops trying.
She gives up, even though he wouldn't.
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
He asks her if she'll put in a good word for him with the girl she likes.
But when it comes down to sacrificing anything of her own, she stops. She stops, even though he'd give up everything for her.
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
So he retaliates. He forms his own club, shows her he has better things to do than hang out with her.
But they're twins. They know what the other is thinking. Amd they don't seem to care.
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
Again.
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
And again.
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
And again.
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
They stop talking to each other completely.
There is silence for days.
Weeks.
Months.
Years.
A decade.
The boy has formed a protective casing around himself from which he never leaves. He works for minimum wage in a large office building. He trudges home every night to his apartment, where he eats his one meal of the day, because the rest of the money goes to the rent, which he still seems to be falling behind on.
The girl, on the other hand, has spiraled outward.
And downward.
She lies in the streets of the city, blowing whatever money sge gets on alcohol, so that she can forget the pain for even a minute. Before it all comes rushing back to her as her head pounds and she's left dirty and penniless on the streets of New York, New York.
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
One meal.
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
She has it worse than that though.
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
Because
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
They
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
Just
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
Couldn't
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
Make
It hurts every single time. It never gets better.
Up.
We must learn to live together as brothers, or perish together as fools.
