Foolish Hope

Disclaimer: I do not own The Vampire Diaries.
"Nik?"
Klaus looks up from his position on the sofa. He's been sketching the same face he'd burned a few days ago. It annoys him to no end how he uncontrollably ends up with her image.
"What is it now, Rebekah?"
Rebekah takes her time in walking from the doorway to a spot a few feet away from him. He notes how she has her serious face. He sits up a little because of it.
"I was serious in my idea to kill Elena when Elijah had me watch her. I would have killed your secret ingredient in creating hybrids."
Klaus wonders where she's going with this. He is very much aware of what had occurred not so long ago. He cocks an eyebrow and gives her an impatient look, as if to say, well? Get on with it.
"And you did nothing to get back at us. We placed your doppelganger's life at risk. A year ago, you wanted nothing more but to preserve her life for your little army. But now, you do nothing. Why?"
She sounds genuinely confused. He doesn't see the point in her asking. It should have been obvious. He thought everyone would have understood.
"Up until a few days ago, I had no use for hybrids anymore, Bekah," he says. Klaus watches her face and pities the young girl. He sometimes forgets how young she was when they all turned into monsters. Rebekah puts on a great tough exterior but he knows her like no one else does. She's absolutely heartbroken about Ester and Finn's betrayal, Kol's escape, and Elijah's leaving.
And if it were in their nature to be affectionate, he'd protectively wrap his arms around her and try to relieve her of her pain. Too bad they were created for sin.
Rebekah truly believed they were going to be a happy family. Klaus (Elijah and Finn, also; it was only the younger siblings who were foolishly blind) knows better. They were never a happy family to begin with anyway.
"I never really believed in mother's words and promises. Elijah and I had our doubts. Obviously, Elijah had stronger ones than I had, for he had been the one to seek out answers. But also, like you and Kol, I couldn't help but hope, even just a little," he looks Rebekah straight in the eye. "Remember what you said before, Bek? You were right. I was only creating hybrids just so I would never have to be alone."
He stands up and prepares to leave the room with his sketches. Maybe if he went outside, he'd be inspired to draw sceneries instead. He stops at the doorway, looking back at Rebekah who was still standing there, staring at his retreating figure.
"And I would've let you kill everyone in this town and severe my chances of ever creating hybrids again if it meant having my family with me forever."
He didn't tell Rebekah that when he said everyone, it did not include Caroline Forbes.
AN: I wanted this drabble to be all about family but I couldn't resist adding a hint of Klaus/Caroline. Oopsie. Review!
