A/N: I was at a writing workshop this weekend, and for part of it I was given a small colorful blanket as a prompt. This is what I wrote. Slight JapanXTaiwan, AU, with absolutely no regard for historical accurateness. Hope you enjoy!
Color. She loves color. She puts it everywhere around her, trying to make her life bright again. Blue- gray. She hates that color. It is constantly a reminder of how many tears she cries. Tears for her big brother, off fighting in a war far away. Tears for her father, who was. The past tense is enough for her to shiver with the sudden cold of her bright pink room and wrap her rainbow- colored blanket around her tightly. Her mother had knitted it herself, as a birthday present. She buries her face in it and runs her fingers over the material.
Her thoughts are interrupted by a knock, then the swish of someone entering her room.
"Mei." The small girl starts, but does not turn to face her friend who she knows is behind her. She hadn't known he would come over today.
"Mei?" She tries to pull herself together and faces him. He is clad in nearly all white, and his jet- black hair makes a stark contrast to the rest of him.
"Kiku." His face softens and he sits down on her yellow and green patterned bed, pulling her blanket around both of them. He looked at her face. There is only a twinge of sadness showing in it, but her hair is mussed up, and her eyes are red around the edges. He pulls her closer to him, and she rests her head on his chest.
"You must miss them terribly." The words cause a few tears to roll down her cheeks.
"Yeah." He gently rubs her back as she starts crying softly, but then she wipes her eyes and looks at him with a small smile. "But at least I have you."
