Brent, the innkeeper, sighed as the watched a young girl and an old men-at- arms ride away. He had been an innkeeper for many years, like his father before him, and knew more Tortalian gossip and affairs of the kingdom than the king's spymaster. He had seen that such girls were becoming rarer and rarer and knew that this one would have a difficult road ahead of her.

Around midday Katarina of Cebrylla, the young girl, suddenly brightened and exclaimed, "Look John, there it is. Corus!"

John smiled at Katarina. "Aye lass, there she is. Our home for the next four years."

Katarina could hardly contain her excitement. She was finally going to become a knight!

At the palace, Sir Nathan sighed as the looked over the list of new pages. There were five boys and one girl, Katarina of Cebrylla, on the list. Every year he saw, much to his disappointment, that fewer and fewer girls would come to train to become knights. Soon, none might come at all. There was a large faction in the court, led by Nobleman Jarek, who wanted the King to forbid girls to train as knights. Unfortunately, they were gaining more followers every year.

"Well," he said to himself, "Let's go meet the new ones."
