Chapter One: Moon

In some odd chance of fate, Caroline Forbes was still human. Sure, there were multiple close calls, that what happens when your best friends are among the supernatural. Atlas, Caroline had survived dating a vampire, almost being smothered to death out of vengeance, vampire hunters chasing her, and various other things. However, after the Miss Mystic Falls pageant and finding out that Tyler was cheating on her with Haley, Caroline was done. Bonnie, Elena, and Stefan would always be her friends, but she was human. Ever since she became involve with the supernatural, her life wasn't normal. People had come back from the dead, she knew people who were a thousand-years-old, hybrid boyfriends etc. Nothing was ever normal, even though she was.

"Welcome parents, family, and friends to Mystic Falls High School Graduation. Today, we honor our seniors and congratulate them on their success here at Mystic Falls High. It has been a great privilege to have known them, and cannot wait to see what their futures behold of them. So I would like to officially begin the commencement ceremony, Andie Andres, Dee Austin-"

The names were already blurring together for Caroline. She watched as Bonnie, then Matt, Elena, walked across the stage before it was finally her turn. As she shook the principal's hand, before switching over her tassel she felt a sigh of relief. Officially, she was done with Mystic Falls and its chaos. In a few months, she would head to Crescent University, hours away from Mystics Falls, in New Orleans to pursue a degree in Interior Design. The rest of the gang was going to nearby Whitmore College, and would most likely continue their rest of their lives being entangled with supernatural occurrences. It was hard breaking the news to them, they had just assumed she would blindly follow them, but she couldn't anymore and if she did she would end up dead. They were now doing everything they could do to try and get Bonnie's powers back. As much as she loved Bonnie, Caroline didn't want to dedicate the next four years of her life to the supernatural, in a few moments, her high school and supernatural life experiences would be over. The ceremony blurred by, and so did the after parties. Once her mom was off to work, Caroline found herself back on the football field where the graduation ceremony had occurred, sitting in the front row of seats. Tomorrow, the graduation setup would be dismantled, pack away for another year. Right now though, Caroline Forbes was just enjoying the evening air and calmness of the moon above here.

"Reminiscing about your graduation already, love," came a smooth British accent. Caroline knew that accent only belonged to one person, Klaus Mikaelson. He was an original, well the original hybrid to be exact, and he 'fancied' her. The affections he held towards her, Caroline severely doubted, but her friends had made use of them. Thus, her role the Mystic Falls's Residents Against Evil became the distraction. Caroline was never fond of the idea but always played along for the sake of her friends.

"What are you doing here?" Caroline asked as he sat down next to her. It had been a few weeks since Klaus had seemed to leave Mystic Falls alone for good. Once Elena had turned, and all of his hybrids sire bond broken by Tyler and Haley ,there was no reason for him to stay. However, here he was dressed in dark wash jeans and an olive henley, looking at her what look of his.

"I came to see my sister graduate for about the thousandth time," He replied with a chuckle. "I'll never quite understand her need for me to be here, it's not like she usually enjoys my company."

"Maybe she just wants you for the graduation presents, I certainly wouldn't mind a mini fridge," Caroline commented. She doubted Rebekah need the normal graduation presents, the only female original had every material item a person could desire.

Klaus smirked, "I am assuming you're leaving Mystic Falls then if your need of a mini fridge."

"Yeah," Caroline said glancing at him. "I am going to a college out of state."

"I figure this small town couldn't keep you forever. Even though I am quite fond of it, I prefer bigger, busier cities," Klaus stated. "I am currently in New Orleans by the way," he added, "In case you were wondering."

Caroline's heart stopped for a second. New Orleans? New Freaking Orleans? She was leaving Mystic Falls to get away from the supernatural, however, her college happened to be in the same town as a Supernatural troublemaker extraordinaire.

"No," Caroline stated. "This cannot be happening to me!" She yelled as she stood up from her chair, and face Klaus. "You can't live in New Orleans now!"

"Why, love?" Klaus asked cocking an eyebrow.

"I choose Crescent University to get away from the supernatural! Now, with you there my chances of being involved in all this mess just skyrocket!" Caroline ranted. Her heart was beating rapidly. Liz, her mother, had urged her to leave Mystic Falls, claiming that her friends would cause her die or worse be turned. As much as she hated the idea of abandoning her friends, Caroline knew her mother was right. She was young, and she wanted to live out her life. However, apparently she couldn't escape the supernatural.

Klaus didn't respond for several moments, and Caroline could see the thoughts that were running through his minds. He was thinking, plotting, and for once Caroline could tell his plotting may benefit her. "Caroline, love, did you not know New Orleans is a hot spot for vampires and others?"

Caroline shook her head, knowing it should have been obvious. New Orleans had economy off of tacky tourist sites of made up supernatural beliefs, so, of course, those ideas had to come from somewhere?

"Well, love," Klaus began, "It seems you have learned the truth of the world today."

"What is that?" Caroline asked, wondering what he meant.

Klaus looked into her eyes, and Caroline felt her breath hitch in her throat. His gaze was intense and seem to draw her in. "No matter how hard you try, no matter what appearances may seem like, there will always be a supernatural something around you. For the rest of your life, you will be at risk of dying from a supernatural cause, I would dare say it is a common as dying in a car accident."

Caroline tried to calm the thoughts that were racing through her mind. Klaus was just trying to freak her out, that is what he loved to do. He loved to torment people, manipulate them, and that was what he was doing right now with her. "Stop trying to scare me, Klaus," she said as she stood up. "You can freak me out as much as you want, but-

"Let me make things clear, Caroline," Klaus was suddenly face to face with her. "You made the right decision to leave your buddies behind, to them you're just collateral damage at the end of the day. New Orleans, which is a wonderful city, was not the best choice if you wished to be completely free of any supernatural risks, for that you would have to live on some desert island. Finally, I am willing to offer you something," he said.

Caroline took a step back from Klaus. She knew she should be wary of any offers from Klaus because it certainly wouldn't be free. Yet, she couldn't help her curiosity. "Go ahead, tell me what the offer is?"

"My protection," Klaus said, causing Caroline to gasp. "You give me the next four years to try to prove to you I am not the evil monster that I am. Aside from me dropping in every now and then to try to win you over, your life will be guaranteed a safe one."

Protection was something Caroline never thought she would have. Of course, her mother protected her, but her friends… Caroline couldn't even argue with Klaus when he said she was just collateral damage to them. But, was she that weak that she needed to entangle herself with Klaus to guarantee her safety? Also, was it worth the risk for her finally letting her guard down and falling for those smirks of him.

"What do you say, love? I promise I won't interfere with your life too much, you can even date other boys. Just let me prove to you that your right about me," Klaus said.

Caroline looked at him, remembering the night when Tyler had bitten her. Too much contradictory belief, a werewolf bite could kill a human, just like it would a vampire, not turn them into one. She was one the humans that were allergic to werewolves' blood just like vampires. Tyler's bite was a death sentence to her, Klaus had come to heal her with his blood, she had spoken of how he was capable of loving someone.

"Yes," Caroline sealing a deal with the Devil, had never seemed so right.

The corner of Klaus' lips turned up enough that it was almost a smile. "Now, love, you never told me why you were out here, alone. Isn't this suppose to be the happiest moment of Miss Mystics Falls life?"

Caroline shook her head, "It would have been, in a different life. Now, it's just another reminder that my friends are going to be stuck forever running into supernatural trouble, to try to save just one of them."

"They are causing quite a stir with this false idea of a cure," Klaus replied. "I have been alive for over a thousand years and if there was one I would have found it and destroyed it by now."

"They've moved on from that," Caroline said quietly bluntly. They're hope for a cure, only lasted for all of a second. When Bonnie tried to save Elena from turning, her magic had not only been stripped, but Grams had told her granddaughter, "Vampires are a part of nature, there is no way to save someone from their fate." However, despite the omen, their group of friends tried for several weeks to figure a cure to save Elena from the vampire lifestyle. However, now they were looking for a way to end the sire bond, but they needed a Bennet witch. So, the next saga of the Mystic Falls gang would be regaining Bonnie's powers, something Caroline knew would only bring trouble.

Klaus smirked, "That's always good to hear, that they realize their stupidity. I don't know why they would even try. I am sure the Salvatore's are enjoying a vampire Elena much better." He said.

"Why," Caroline began looking into his eyes, "What is so horrible about being human?"

Klaus took that moment to gently ran his fingers through Caroline's hair. He could sense her heart beat speeding up, "Humanity, dear Caroline, is the greatest weakness one can have."

The Hybrid had her frustrated her so much. In this moment, he could truly see his hatred for humanity, for humans. They, after all, were just means to the ends, as he once out it. "Is that what I am then," Caroline began, not knowing what's he was saying. "Am I a weakness to you?" She was peering into those eyes, the ones that she tried so hard not to let draw her in.

"Yes," Klaus said with any hesitation, so much so that it shocked her. Him, the great, powerful, hybrid, was admitting a weakness. "You are a weakness, as much as a pain to say it. But you a little, fragile, human girl, could honestly be my undoing."

Caroline stared at him, not knowing what to say. It was the closest thing to a decent, honest, confession she had gotten from him, or perhaps from any guy. Tyler's lackluster I love you's, really didn't match up, to what he had just said. Like any eighteen-year-old girl, who was not expecting a declaration of love, or caring, or interests; she was shocked. So, she did what any sane person would do if left alone to long with Niklaus Michelson, she ran away and didn't look back.
