"You don't know how to ride a bike," Gibbs muttered as he made sure Emily's bright pink helmet was on tight.
"Both mama and Nonna agreed it was too dangerous," Fornell replied as he stood the bike up.
"But Daddy everyone knows how to ride a bike," Five year old Emily declared with certainty. Fornell smiled at his daughter not wanting to reveal how ashamed he was at not being able to ride the bike and never bothering to learn despite having many opportunities and years to do so.
"We're gonna teach him," Gibbs told Emily as he pulled out another helmet.
"I'm not sure about this," Fornell uttered.
"You'll be fine Daddy," Emily told him.
"You go first Emily," Fornell decided as his anxiety levels rose. He also noticed that his bike did not have training wheels like Emily's did, which only heightened Fornell's anxiety levels.
"Daddy's scared," Emily declared as Gibbs helped her sit on the bike.
"We'll show your Dad how it's done and then he won't be so scared," Gibbs told the little girl.
Fornell was amazed at how quickly Emily had managed to learn how to ride the bike. He could hear her giggling from across the park. His joy at his daughter mastering a new skill was overshadowed by the fact it would soon be his turn.
Gibbs approached him with the faint hint of a smile on his face.
"You're enjoying this too much," Fornell declared as he got up onto the bicycle. Fornell suddenly realised how unstable two wheels were. "Don't let me fall over, Gibbs."
"I got you, Tobias," Gibbs reassured his friend.
