I will always be there to save you. It was a good thought. Too bad there is no such thing as a good thought here. He thought. He waited painfully in the darkness for someone who would never come. He would never risk his life for this. He knew that this was being a pessimistic jerk, as his partner would say, but he couldn't help it. His partner had a daughter who meant everything to him and his partner was forced to choose between his daughter and partner. He knew it to be a decision to be made without any hesitation. Of course he would choose Gracie. He wouldn't want it any other way. He smiled as he felt and watched every little last bit of blood go out of his body and he felt himself die.
Steve awoke with a start. God he hated that dream, except he ususally felt at peace after it. Well, not at first, at first he wanted Danny to find him but after he got to know and love him, he knew he wanted Gracie to get a chance to live. If Danny had gone after him then Gracie would surely have been killed.
Accidentally, it turns out when he awoke with such a start, he woke his partner up.
"Babe? What are you doing up at," a quick look at the clock, "Three-thirty in the morning?" Danny mumbled his voice still husky from sleep.
"Nothing. Just a dream. Go back to sleep, love." He said and flipped himself over. He evened his breathing out and closed his eyes.
"I will never get why you do that. I know when you are awake and I know when you are asleep and this is a definite awake moment. What's bugging you? And you better tell me so I don't call Kono and have her beat it out of you and probably a little for screwing up at this ungodly hour." Danny threatened, picking up the phone for emphasis.
Steve sighed. Danny really would call and he didn't feel like waking poor Kono up just for because he was too much of a wuss to tell Danny about the dream. He couldn't look Danny in the eye while telling him about the dream and he just hear Danny's retort of at least you know what my decision would be and accepted it. It didn't come.
"Why would you think I wouldn't save the both of you? Danny asked, genuinely concerned.
Steve shrugged and finally looked at Danny. Even in the dark of the morning, he could still see the concern, worry and was that fear in Danny's eyes. He looked away, just to have Danny grab his face and make him look at him again.
"I don't know what you've gotten in your thick skull of yours but I will never let you die. Do you understand me? Never! Got it?" Danny said, a little too loudly.
"I got it. Loud and clear, love" Steve joked and kissed Danny before he could come up with a good retort.
Turns out, you don't need a good retort during the best feel-better sex.
