Nighthawk, Riverclan warrior, swam as fast as she could to the shore. Smoke filled the air, blood turned waters red, and the fires took the dead. The clans were fighting a powerful creature, named flame dancer for the ability to create fire. The flame dancer was a strange new creature, who took many cats from each clan every day. The creature looked like a snake with huge wings and legs.
Nighthawk ran towards the cave where the clans hid together, but the beast had already seen her. With a mighty roar, the flame dancer swooped down behind the Riverclan warrior and prepared to drown her with flames. Diving into the water, Nighthawk managed to get away, but barely saved her tail. Nightfox, Nighthawk's best friend, ran to the place where Nighthawk was scrambling out of the water. Nightfox was, well, a fox, but rose in the clans, dubbed a cat. The two dove into the deep cave where the other cats were.
"That was close! You be careful 'hawk, because soon I won't be able to help you."
"Don't remind me of the deaths already spent, 'fox." Nighthawk glanced at the shrinking group, less and less every day. No one knew if they were going to live to the next dawn or not. Almost all prey had run away, except for the bats and other creatures in the caves. Cats were weak, hungry, cold, and afraid.
A loud screech caused the cats to look at the cave entrance. Dustclaw, the Riverclan deputy, was being engulfed in flames, caused by the flame dancer. His mate, Riverflower, cried out in anguish and hid her two kits behind her back. In a few mere seconds, Dustclaw had turned to ashes. Riverflower pulled her two kits closer to her tan body.
The flame dancer circled over the cave, roaring in delight at the fun in burning the cats. Cloudstar slowly turned towards the place where his deputy died, and longley stared at it. Only a pile of ashes marked his death place.
"A new deputy must be chosen but whom?" He muttered to himself. Cloudstar looked up towards silverpelt, fuller than ever.
