This story is based entirely on the song What Hurts The Most by Rascal Flatts.

I read a challenge about this song and immediately thought about Chase. So… I gave it a shot.

What Hurts The Most

It was Tuesday night and Dr. Robert Chase sat alone in his living room, staring at the blank screen of the television drowning his sorrows in a bottle of whiskey. He listened to the downpour of rain pounding on the roof as he wondered why, week after week, he set himself up for this same miserable routine. He didn't try to resist the tears burning in his eyes. He let himself cry. Six days a week he pretends he's ok, but every Tuesday is the same story. He reminds Dr. Allison Cameron that he wants a relationship with her, and every Tuesday she rejects him. And he goes home alone.

Chase sometimes regrets telling Cameron how he feels, but deep down he knows she feels the same way. She is just afraid. Everybody knows that Allison Cameron is afraid of commitment. If only he had the courage to pursue it further. If only he could bring himself to push her harder. But he is currently maxed out on the amount of rejection he can handle in a single week. Sometimes he thinks about just giving up. But then he would never know if, eventually, she would break down. So he perseveres, once a week, trying to show Cameron that he loves her.

Everyone Chase sees every day knows about the "relationship" he had briefly had with Cameron. And six days a week, he pretends it never happened. He smiles through the workday but inside, his heart breaks every time he sees Allison Cameron and he wants to tell her one more time that he wants to be with her. Maybe hearing it just one more time would convince her. But, he promised her he would limit it to Tuesdays. And every Tuesday he tries to say all the things he should have told her in the first place, before any of this ever happened.

And every Tuesday he goes home, sits on the couch with his whiskey, and thinks about Cameron walking away from him when he confessed that he wants more. That's what hurts the most.
