Title: Where the Hearth Is

Characters: Morwen, mentions of Húrin and Túrin

Prompt: 041. this is heaven to no one else but me; and I'll defend it as long as I can be

Author's Notes: I like getting inside Morwen's head, even if it is rather dark and bleak in there. In the Unfinished Tales, it says of her: 'The sorrows of the House of Bëor saddened her heart; for she came as an exile to Dor-lómin from Dorthonion after the ruin of the Bragollach.'

I had seen my husband ride away to war, and watched my son creep away in the night. Now it was my turn. It was not a decision I made lightly or hastily, but I think I knew long before that it would eventually come to this – that I would surrender, that I would flee, leaving the last of my husband's people to an unknown and most likely evil fate.

Soon after we first met, Húrin told me that although I had lost my home in Dorthonion, I would have another home in Dor-lómin. When he left to go to war, I told him that I would guard what he left in my keeping until he returned. But he has not come back, and I can no longer keep my word. Soon I will be gone, following the same road my son took so many years ago, but there will be none to see my passing, and no one to keep the fire burning in my home.
