"And they lived happily ever after. The End."

"Aww, thath it?" asked Amelia.

Sarah smiled down at her daughter. "Yep. That's it. That's the end of the story."

"But what happenth nest?" the dark-haired 6-year-old persisted.

"Weren't you listening?" demanded her blonde older brother. "Mommy just said, 'They lived happily ever after.'"

"What's 'happ'ly ever afder mean?'"

Justin shrugged with all the languorous confidence of an 8-year-old prince. "Dunno."

"It means they were always happy, from that point on," Sarah explained.

"That's dumb," Justin responded.

"No, ith not!" Amelia replied. "Mommy, Dustin thed a bad word."

"Did not!"

"Did too! You thed, 'dumb.' Mommy, he thed it; I heard him!"

"But it is dumb. Nobody can be happy all the time. And don't call me 'Dustin.' My name's 'Justin.' Juhss-tin."

"That's what I thed," the young girl lisped through the gap where, until that morning, her two front baby teeth had been, "'Dustin.'"

"JUHS-tin."

"DUHS-tin."

"Justin," Sarah intervened, "she's not making fun of you. She'll be able to say it again once her adult teeth grow in."

Amelia stuck her tongue out at her brother.

"And none of that, young lady."

Amelia ducked her head and looked back at the storybook. She stroked the colorful illustration of the dancing king and queen with tiny fingers.

"But, they did live happ'ly ever afder. Didn't they, Mommy?" she asked anxiously, looking back up at her mother.

"Yes. Yes, they did," Sarah replied with a soft smile.

"I still say that's dumb," Justin replied obstinately.

"Well then, let's ask your father. Jareth, what do you think?" She turned to her husband, who was half-reclining on their bed with the 4-year-old twins Cassandra and Anastasia curled up in his lap. The only response was a gentle snore.

Jareth, the mighty Goblin King, was fast asleep.
