Realisation
She is ready; it was now or never. The pain and frustration had haunted her- never leaving her side after that moment.
He looks on, desperate to find something-anything- that will make her stay. But for once words are far beyond him, his mouth opens but no words escape. He is just stood there, helplessly without being able to alter the course of events. He can do more than look on as the events unfurled.
For a few short moments they both thought this is how it will end… Silence… No one fighting to save it.
But as she continues to walk away, her footsteps echo like the beating of a drum announcing the ever-impending doom. The sounds never leave his mind- hanging on to make him realise just what is happening, and so he panics. And that is when words are no longer out of his reach- instead they are tumbling from his mouth in an uncontrolled rush; he is there now- making a stand.
Those words are music to her ears. For once she is glad for the emotional outburst, and it is then that she turns to face him- maybe just to hear him out or maybe just because she doesn't want to leave. But his words wash over her in a sweet, soothing harmony.
He can see that her face was softening. There is no longer the pain dominating her features- there is no longer a fire of rage burning in her eyes. It is replaced with a happiness- that illuminated her whole persona, and her eyes are finally like gateways into her soul.
But it only lasts for a split second.
As quickly as it has come- it has gone. He almost swears that it could have been a figment of his imagination. Her face hardens- her barriers rebuild- he has lost all his opportunity. She has cocooned herself in once more- protecting herself from the world.
If this has been a movie- this wouldn't have happened- it would have been simple. This would be the moment she'd be in his arms and there would be a kiss, everything would be right in the world. But alas, it was not so. This was not going to be a happy ending- because reality has no happy endings.
He sighs, resigning all hope; sometimes there was no point in clinging on. She turns- walking away once more.
It was then that they both realise that something special- unique almost- has escaped their grasps. And the further she walks away, the more the realisation dawns upon them:
This was just the way it has to be
