From the moment they had met at the young age of twenty-five to the day he had retired when they were just shy of thirty-two, Virgil Minelli had watched as Teresa Lisbon and Patrick Jane had defied inertia and spun into each other, faster than the speed of light. They'd been friends since the beginning, but there was always something there, blossoming right under the surface. He waited for something to happen, not knowing if he would turn a blind eye to their relationship or show them the rule book.

He didn't need to worry about it though, nothing happened as far as he could tell. So, he left the saga of Jane and Lisbon's to be the next director's problem. Let him or her decide how to handle them while he waited for a call from Lisbon telling him that she was seeing Jane.

He had almost expected them not to get together when he got a Skype call from them a long twelve years later. He barely recognized them, giggling and both telling the other to tell him the news.

"You're together," Minelli said, sparing them the trouble. "Aren't you?"

Lisbon didn't look like she could smile any wider even if she tried. "Yes."

"Yes," Jane echoed, looking at her like he was still trying to believe that she was there with him and that she loved him too.

Their happiness was contagious, Minelli's face broke into a large grin and he started to laugh. "Well, it took the two of you long enough to get together! I was beginning to think it would never happen."

"Me either," Lisbon confessed, looking at Jane with such pure adoration.

"It took us a little while to find our footing, for me to pluck up the courage to tell her. . ." Jane admitted, his face falling a little.

Minelli guessed there was more to the story than the younger couple was telling, but he didn't press them for details, whatever had happened between them in the days following their coming together was probably best left in the dark.

"So, how did it happen?" Minelli asked, knowing May would want all the details when she came home from work later that day.

Lisbon laughed. "You tell him, okay?"

Jane nodded and put his arm securely around Lisbon's waist. "Well, Teresa was getting ready to accept a position at the FBI in Washington D.C and she kept asking me how I felt about her leaving. I wanted to tell her, I wanted to tell her so badly but I couldn't. . . I didn't know how to, I was afraid she would reject me or maybe she would think I was only telling her what she wanted to hear so I would keep her in Texas with me. And then, she was going to leave. . ."

He trailed off and Minelli could see the lost, faraway look in his eyes. Lisbon took his hand and squeezed it, taking over for him where he had left off.

"We had a huge argument, huge. . . well; it was mostly me yelling at him because he still wasn't really talking to me. Yes, there was a part of me that knew he didn't want me to go but I wanted to hear it. So, I left. . . I went to the airport, checked in and boarded the plane while I looked back the whole entire time. Just when I thought it was really over between us, he found me and confessed that he loved me in front of all the passengers, I told him it was too late. But in the end, my seatmate convinced me to go and talk to him one more time. So, I did. I asked him if he meant it, he told me that he did. . . and here we are today."

"Well, I'm happy for the both of you. You two deserve happiness after everything you've been through," Minelli said. "Listen, I have to go now and make dinner before May comes home. If anything else happens between the two of you, I want to know right away! Okay?"

"Okay," Lisbon answered, smiling at him while Jane nodded in agreement. "Talk to you soon."

They ended the call and Minelli went to the kitchen, completely satisfied with the turn of events.

.

A couple of months later, Minelli got a call from Lisbon telling him that she and Jane were engaged. He already knew they were getting married. News traveled fast through the old CBI grapevine and he had been expecting her call and invitation for a few hours.

He gave his regrets after the invitation had been issued and told her that he and May would come visit them as soon as possible, visiting them as a married couple was something to look forward to.

She sounded disappointed but rallied her spirits immediately; she was always a good sport, always a trooper. As he hung up the phone, he found himself wishing he could be there to witness their big day, over the past few months; Minelli had become a little puffed up when it had come to two of his favorite people.

He had been their fairy godfather, in a way, bringing the two of them together. If he had never insisted that Lisbon take him on as her consultant after the first case then they would have never spoken again.

May insisted he was giving himself far too much credit. Yes, he had suggested they work together, she agreed. But he couldn't force chemistry, couldn't force the affection and friendship that was naturally born between two people who worked closely together for so long. He had orchestrated their relationship and nature had taken its course.

He smiled to himself and called to tell her the news about Jane and Lisbon's nuptials.

.

Eight months later, Minelli was holding Jane and Lisbon's baby in his arms while they made dinner with May.

Anne Michelle Jane was the perfect mixture of her parents.

"Hi baby," Minelli cooed, kissing her on the forehead as he sat down in the rocking chair next to her crib. "Hello Anne Michelle, I'm your Grandpa Virgil. You don't know how special you are yet but one day when you're older, I'm going to tell you the whole entire story about how your daddy and mommy met and how I got them together. Don't let Grandma May tell you any different, I was the one who got them together. And after I tell you the story, you're going to know why you're so special. Why you're so loved. Yes, yes. . . you are."

The way she looked up at him with her smiling green eyes, Minelli was pretty sure Anne Michelle understood exactly what he was saying to her.

"Getting soft in your old age?" Jane asked, breaking into his one-sided conversation with Anne Michelle.

"Hardly!" Minelli scoffed, trying to put on a gruff face but failing miserably.

Jane smiled at him. "Hey, I almost forgot to thank you. For giving me a second chance and allowing me to work with Teresa. I don't think I could ever thank you enough for it."

Minelli wondered if he had heard his conversation with his daughter, but he shrugged it off and smiled. "You're welcome," he answered. "It was my pleasure."

Author's Note:

This is such a messy story, it came to me in bits and pieces and I just wrote it all down without it having any cohesiveness. Anyways, tell me what you think of this! I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
