ME: This is my first COD story, so please keep the flames to a minimum.
Day 6, 2016
"Do you have the DSM?"
Roach was sure he had never truly appreciated Lieutenant General Hershel von Shepherd III. The man was reckless and got to sit in a comfy chair in a guarded base far away from the frontline.
One of two rookies in the One-Four-One, the late PFC Joseph Allen of the US Army Rangers, mentioned that a former squadmate of his, Corporal Dunn, said that Shepherd never cared about 'danger close'.
All of that flew out the door now. General Shepherd-their General-had gone out of his way to extract him, Ghost, Archer, Toad, Scarecrow, Ozone...there were four other guys that got killed by mines, however, and not even Shepherd's blank check had enough to bring them back. Ozone and Scarecrow were both probably dead from the mortar strike. At least Archer, Toad and Ghost would live.
"And me," he thought. Wasn't too self centered. Didn't get you through life.
"We got it, sir!" It was Ghost, Captain MacTavish, or 'Soaps' XO.
"Good," he said, nodding his approval. He indicated Roach. "Get Sergeant Sanderson in here, he is under standing orders to live.
"Sir," Roach said, coughing.
They moved him into the Pave Low. Roach groaned. He would live, but he would have to keep off his feet for sometime.
Another man in a black uniform approached Shepherd as they sat Roach down. He would have saluted if that didn't risk the off-chance a Russkie Ultra would notice and go out of their way to kill the General.
"Report soldier," Shepherd said.
"Sir," he said, "Thunder Two-One and two snipers have located two survivors."
"Son?" Clearly the three-star didn't expect anyone to have survived.
"Looks like they got hit by a mortar strike sir." Kid couldn't have been older than nineteen. Odd since he was in a black ops unit protecting a US Army General. "Lieutenant Riley and Sergeant Sanderson must have assumed they were killed, but they'll die if we don't get them out of here soon."
"Get 'em over here," Shepherd said. "Anyone else?"
"Four bodies sir. They're from the Task Force. Couldn't identify them."
"Pity," he said, resignation in his voice. "Get the two survivors in here. And kill off those Russians before they kill us."
"Sir!" The soldier got on his radio, giving out the orders.
Roach's ears had perked up about the two survivors. Ozone and Scarecrow were alive, probably even more messed up than him, but alive.
"Guess the world actually rewards good men," Roach thought as he lost consciousness.
Hopefully that was better than I expected. Review and PM. This one-shot could become a multi-shot if I get enough good ideas.
P.S. Please read my other stories if you have the time.
