Hating to Lose

Disclaimer: I don't own any of the Prince of Tennis characters or Prince of Tennis at all. I only own this small plot bunny.

Author's Note: This just came to me one day in the sweltering heat. It's harder than it looks writing about Tezuka Kunimitsu and his inner workings.

The heat was unbearable. Tezuka pinched the bridge of his nose, hoping that it would stop him from snapping at the team. His right eye involuntarily twitched as he watched Kikumaru start fooling around with Momoshiro, dragging in Echizen in their little antics. Watching them making exaggerated movement made the heat all the more scorching.

"Saa, Tezuka. Are you feeling well?" Tezuka didn't even need to turn around to know that Fuji was directly behind him, smiling that near never-ending smile. Sometimes he wondered how he ended up with such a dynamic tennis regular team.

Ignoring Fuji, Tezuka turned his attention back to the trio. "Kikumaru, Momoshiro, Echizen, twenty laps!" Tezuka long since learned how to tune out their whining and glared at them, daring them to speak up and add more laps. With low muttered sayings, the boys left to do their laps while the others, with the exception of Fuji, went back to practicing what they were doing before.

"It certainly is hot today." Fuji's voice came again, and Tezuka knew that he wouldn't be able to ignore it.

Letting out a sigh, Tezuka turned to face Seigaku's legendary genius. "Fuji, ten laps." His hand came back up to message the area near his temple, trying his hardest not to lose his focus and his usual mask of indifference, which already began to fail.

"Now now Tezuka, I'll be back later." Fuji's smile only widened and Tezuka had a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach at Fuji's look. Who knew what the sadistic genius of Seigaku could come up with? The laps will surely give him time to think of a plan and then execute it. All ready was Tezuka regretting his choice of action. Damn his habit!

As he stood by and watched the regulars and non-regulars alike, he wondered once more how this team of ragtag students bonded together and aimed straight for the Nationals.

"One would feel astounded at how our tennis team ended up with kids who just hate to lose." Coach Ryuuzaki walked up to Tezuka, smiling with blatant pride at all the students in front of her. Tezuka nodded, thinking of how ironic the statement that coach Ryuuzaki truly was.

I hope I haven't made Tezuka or any of the regulars too OOC.
