The first time Garcia got together with Emily and JJ after both were back at the BAU was a big night. Since Emily had given up coffee, Garcia assumed she had also given up alcohol and anything else exciting. So she made some ridiculously amazing hot chocolate and hoped that Emily would accept it. To make it Valentines friendly, Garcia added one of the candy canes from the eight boxes she bought on clearance. Then, she put in the DVD of choice and waited for JJ and Emily to arrive.
"Hey. Sorry we're late," JJ apologized.
"Your hot chocolate's cold…" Garcia grumbled.
"There's a microwave…" Emily pointed. "So…what are we watching?"
"Only the most romantic movie ever…The Notebook…" Garcia sighed.
"Oh, God… Garcia, that movie's like, two-and-a-half hours long…" JJ balked.
"They couldn't have called it The Diary or the Journal…" Emily interjected, rolling her eyes.
"You've never seen it, have you?" Garcia asked, a slow smile spreading over her face. "How could you have never seen this? It was released in 2004!"
"I was a little busy, Garcia," Emily insisted, taking a sip of the peppermint flavored hot chocolate.
"Seriously? I can't stay here 'til 1 AM watching this. I was up with Henry on and off all last night. I'm exhausted…" JJ objected. "Besides, I've seen this a million times…"
"Well, Emily hasn't…And if you'd have been here on time…" Garcia smiled, pressing play. "Come on. We're all back together. We've got all the time in the world…"
They sat side-by-side-by-side on the couch. Garcia did her best to keep her mouth shut and not spoil any of the major plot points for her friend.
"God, I love the 1940s," Garcia sighed happily. "If I were alive in the '40s, I'd want to be a pinup girl."
"Life was so much simpler then, wasn't it?" JJ mused. "I mean, look. They can just lie down in the middle of the street and stare at a stoplight…."
"Unrealistic…" Emily complained, tossing popcorn at the screen. "And if that guy hung from my Ferris wheel, I'd have done a lot more than that girl did…"
"Oh, hush! It's a gorgeous movie. Just open your mind and watch, okay?" Garcia urged.
Just as Garcia hoped, when Emily and JJ relaxed and took it in, they were taken away. Transported fully and completely into the life and times where people were close and fashion was amazing and even without modern technology, Garcia felt sure she could adjust.
At the movie's big moment - the point where Garcia always broke down and sobbed like a baby - had them all passing a box of tissues to one another. Garcia wept loudly, and unashamed. JJ's tears fell silent and dignified and Emily only swallowed convulsively and blinked a few times.
While everything didn't happen exactly as Garcia imagined, the important thing was, they were together. That they always made time for one another. Even now that so much had changed.
By that logic, the night was perfect.
