Hermione: "Ow, that looks really painful."

Ron: "So painful, they might chop it."

Hermione: "I'm sure Madam Pomfrey will fix it in a heartbeat."

Ron: "It's too late. It's ruined. It'll have to be chopped off."

Hermione: "Oh, Ron, you're so brave!"

Ron: "Ah – Well, I – Er – It's nothing, really, I -"

Hermione, laughing: "Nothing? Are you joking? Seeing that huge dog lunge at you? I'd have died of fright!"

Ron: "Well, that was quite frightening –"

Hermione: "And being all alone with a broken leg in a room with someone you thought was a mass-murderer?"

She shudders at the thought.

Ron: "Well, yeah, that's something I wouldn't relish repeating -"

Hermione: "And you thought he was going to stab you, before, in the dormitory!"

Ron: "-I-"

Hermione: "Oh, Ron!"

She hugs him, fiercely. He's taken off guard and winces as his leg jerks, slightly. She hears him and pulls away.

Hermione: "Sorry,"

Suddenly they are interrupted by Remus Lupin dragging a struggling Peter Pettigrew up the tunnel beside them.

Peter Pettigrew To Remus Lupin: "Dung Beatles, Flobberworms, anything but the Dementors!"

Peter Pettigrew To Ron: "Ron! Haven't I been a good pet? A good rat? You wont let them give me to the Dementors, will you? I was your rat!"

(Ron, recoiling in disgust: "You slept in my bed!")

Peter Pettigrew To Hermione: "Sweet girl, clever girl! Surely you wont let them -"

Remus Lupin: "Get away from her!"

He continues to whimper and plead to Remus Lupin as he drags him away from them. Hermione turns back to Ron.

Hermione: "Is there anything I can do? To help with the pain?"

Ron: "Just – stay with me."

Hermione: laughing "Right now I wouldn't leave you for the world!"

He grins, gratefully. They both start to reach out for each other's hand but falter. Their fingers touch. Slowly and tenderly they hold hands, gazing into each other's eyes. Suddenly they hear a gasp from behind them. They both look round. Remus Lupin is standing, staring in horror, his wand still pointing at Peter Pettigrew, at a patch of cloud from which the full moon is clearly rising. Hermione jumps to her feet:

Hermione: "Harry!"
