One of the secrets that died with Albus Dumbledore, was a race of peculiar creatures who secretly lived in the Forbidden Forest. He was never able to figure out where they came from or why the chose to stay in the forest, but he was enchanted by them. The appeared at first glance to be human in stature. Tall and lithe, with impossibly dark hair. They had almond shaped eyes that slanted gently upwards. All of the creatures that Dumbledore had met possessed sage green eyes. In fact, until you got close to them they look very human. That is what Dumbledore thought the first time he encountered them. That a student had wandered into the forest and had been injured.
It was an early Winter morning. Most of the students had returned home to celebrate Yule with their families. Albus had decided to take a walk through the Forbidden Forest to get some fresh air and maybe spend some time with the Centaurs. The air was thick with a cold fog, making visibility dismal. It was in these conditions that he saw the human form curled up in the roots of a large tree. He rushed over and dispelled some of the fog with Lumos. The figure was shrouded with an earthy brown cloak that was roughly hewn. He gently turned the figure, that of a young woman, to see if there was anything to be done.
The girl was cold and dead, and had been for a long time. But what disturbed Albus the most was the silver swirling tattoos that flickered lazily across the girls skin. He touched her cheek tenderly and the scrawls rushed away from his touch. He snapped his hand back quickly and the tattoo's settled back down. He sat back on his haunches to assess the situation when he heard the whispering. He jumped up as fast as his ageing form could and turned to face the Forest, his still lit wand held high. The fog had taken on a menacing quality. The silence and stillness was no longer a comfort. It was now punctuated by a constant whispering. The light from his want was reflecting silver and green in the still air.
All at once the fog parted in front of him and another cloaked woman approached slowly, her skin was also adorned by silver tatoo's and her eyes were the brightest green that Albus had ever seen set into a human face. She skirted around the man and fell upon the body of the other girl, her whispering intensifying. Albus felt slightly uncomfortable. The fear he had been feeling earlier had started to ease. These creatures did not seem violent, in fact they seemed childlike. But perhaps it was the wide slanted eyes that belied innocence. Dumbledore slowly dropped down to his knees, bringing himself level with both girls.
The living girl turned her face from the body of the girl in her arms. Silver tears trailed down her face and Dumbledore felt his heart ache. He felt helpless to help, and unable to express his sudden emotions. The whispering had never ceased, but it was with shock that he realized the girls lips were not moving, but he was positive the noise was coming from her. He was about to speak when the thud of hooves filled the air. Albus turned thinking to see the centaurs, but was shocked when a unicorn approached the tree. He turned back to the girl to ask her a name, but she had already risen with the body of the other girl and was approaching the unicorn. Speechless he watched as the girl lay the body across the back of the unicorn and touched her forehead to the unicorns muzzle. Before he could act, the fog had closed in around them, the last thing he noticed was a single silver tear trailing from the unicorns eye.
