Before I start I have to say that this is not meant to be character bashing of any sort, I am simply attempting to address a point that must have caused some sort of resentment at the SGC. Set after S7's 'Chimera'

"No Jack, with all due respect, it isn't fair! Why the hell does she get to tell him what's really going on down here?"

Colonel O'Neill looked at the set face and rigid posture of Colonel Peterson and sighed. They were old friends, going way back before the program – pretty much the only reason he was tolerating any smack-talk about his 2iC – and plus, he kind of had a point.

Nonetheless… "There were extenuating circumstances there, Mike, and you know it."

"All that guy saw was some whack job using a weapon he'd never seen before. A cover story about experimental new military technology would have – "

Jack shook his head "He'd never have bought it."

"So what Jack? It's none of his god damned business anyway. My wife doesn't buy the Deep Space Radar Telemetry crap for a moment but that doesn't mean that I can suddenly tell her that the real reason I missed our kid being born was because I was stuck in some stinking Goa'uld prison rather than some ridiculous meeting."

"You could say that about anyone here. We've all made sacrifices with our loved ones."

"Yes, we have Jack. And yet we are all asked to keep quiet except for Major Carter. What makes her so special?"

"You've got to admit, Mike – Carter has done a hell of a lot for this base, hell, this planet."

"I know that Jack, I know." The other Colonel slumped into a chair, defeated. "And I'm not denying that she's done a lot, but… I'm just frustrated that I get back from telling Lieutenant James' wife and his two young daughters that he died in some goddamned training accident rather than saving the world; and then I'm told that Major Carter got permission for full disclosure to her boyfriend of, what, a month? Just because he couldn't keep his nose out of where it doesn't belong."

Ah, here it was, the real reason for coming crashing into his office angry as hell. Mike always looked out for his team and their families, and Jack could see all too clearly how frustrating this apparent special treatment must be for him.

"Look Mike, I know – " He was cut off by the very Major herself running straight into his office without so much as a knock.

"Sir, I need you to – oh, sorry, am I interrupting?"

Jack bashed his head against his desk. Carter had probably unwittingly made things worse. Peterson answered before he could.

"Oh no Major, go right ahead. Anything you've got to run into your CO's office to say must be more important that anything else." Colonel Peterson stood up, brushing past the Major without another word.
