"Stephen is your ex-husband, and father of Wirt, and Jonathan is Gregory's father, but you two are not married?"

"Thats correct."

"How old was Wirt when you and Stephen separated?"

"He was...eight or seven? I don't quite remember." Elspeth answered.

The lawyer nodded, "Thats alright miss. How old was Wirt when you introduced him to Jonathan?"

"Eight."

"And how old was he when Greg was born?"

"Nine."

"Did you ever notice anything odd going on between Jonathan and the boys?"

Elspeth shook her head. "Not at all. Greg was always happy. Wirt was just always kind of awkward and shy."

"Normal teenage traits, hm?" The lawyer spoke. "Did Wirt or Greg ever say anything out of the ordinary to you?"

"No-...well, Greg never, he was always smiling. But when Wirt was about eleven we were watching the news, and a report about a teenage girl being raped by her stepfather came on. Wirt asked me what I would think-What I would do if Jonathan ever did that kind of thing to him. I told him not to think so disgusting and I left." Elspeth sputtered, glaring at Wirt.

"Nothing further." Jonathan's lawyer said.

Wirt's lawyer stood.

"Elspeth, you're a mother of two and you failed to notice that for about six years, your first born child was being assaulted and beaten, and then for a sort amount of time, your youngest the same."

Jonathan's lawyer shot up. "Objection!"

The judge waved him off. "Over ruled."

Elspeth straightened in her seat. "I had no reason to believe that such events were happening."

"You never noticed the bruises, the screaming, crying, anti-social behavior!? You never saw any blood?!"

Wirt began to shake. It was like his worst nightmare was coming to life again.

"I never saw anything! I'm a good mother!" Elspeth cried.

"A good mother would have seen it, a good mother would have listened." The lawyer hissed. He turned to the judge. "Nothing further."
