"Mummy! Wake up!"
Zoe was awoken by her youngest daughter, four year old Madison, or Maddy for short.
"Hello" Zoe smiled sleepily.
"It's Mummy's Day!" Madison announced happily.
"Mothering Sunday" Zoe corrected, sitting up. "Where's Daddy, Ethan, and Sophia?" she enquired.
"Er…" Madison broke into a giggle.
"Ah" her mother caught on. Max and their twins were obviously planning a surprise for her, downstairs. "Is it a secret?" she asked. Madison nodded, she was terrible at keeping quiet about surprises.
"I'm not allowed to tell you" she informed Zoe.
"Okay" Zoe replied.
Madison snuggled into her mum. "I love you Mummy!" she beamed.
"I love you too" smiled Zoe.
If anyone had told Zoe five or six years ago that she would be happily married, to a porter (well, paramedic now) of all people, with three children, she would have thought them mad. Her relationship with Max had started off as a fling, she had left, but then she had been involved in a car accident, and had woken up to Max sitting next to her, crying his eyes out. Then they had moved in together, as a "proper" couple, she had fallen pregnant with twins, which was a miracle in itself as Zoe thought she couldn't have children, and Max had proposed.
Sophia and Ethan were born, Madison Eva a year or so later, and then Max and Zoe had got married. Then Max had decided that he'd had enough of being a porter, and had taken training to be a paramedic, something which Zoe was incredibly proud of.
"Mummy! Are you up?" called Sophia, their eldest.
"She is!" Madison shouted back.
"Come down then, Maddy!" Ethan butted in.
"I wanna stay with you" Madison scowled.
"Go and see what Soph wants" Zoe ordered. Sophia doted on Zoe, and would likely be very annoyed with her younger sibling if she didn't help out with whatever surprise she was planning.
Madison reluctantly got out of bed and went downstairs.
"Shh! Don't let Mum hear us coming up the stairs!" Zoe heard Max whisper a few minutes later.
"You've blown that one Mr Walker" Zoe laughed.
She got her phone off the bedside table and pretended to consult it, as if she hadn't heard anything.
Soon enough, she heard a scuffling outside.
"Surprise!" Ethan, Sophia, Madison, and Max burst through the door. Ethan was holding a cup of coffee, Max a plate of pancakes, and Sophia's arms were full of presents.
"Hello!" Zoe grinned at the sight.
"Happy Mother's Day, gorgeous" Max said, passing her the plate of pancakes and placing a kiss on her lips.
Ethan set the cup of coffee down on the bedside table and sat on the bed, oblivious to his parent's show of affection. The girls, meanwhile, made sick noises in unison.
"Pipe down, you two, otherwise I'll tickle you!" Zoe warned her daughters.
"Sorry" apologised Sophia, and put the presents down on the bed. She was the spitting image of her mum, had a smile just like Max's, and a cheeky side like him as well. Her twin, on the other hand, was quite shy and reserved, and definitely a Mummy's boy. Madison was a ball of energy, with a temper just like Zoe's as well.
"Thank you, all of you" smiled Zoe when she had opened all of her presents.
"Which is your favourite? Is it the one from me?" asked Ethan.
"No it's not! It's the one from me!" scowled Madison.
"I like them all equally, just like I love the three of you equally." Smiled Zoe.
"You love me as well!" said Max.
"Of course I do" his wife replied.
"Thank you for all your presents, I'm very grateful to have all of you in my life" Zoe said, a tear in her eye.
"Don't be a silly Mummy and cry" ordered Sophia, causing Madison to giggle and Ethan to smile.
Max put his arm around Zoe's waist. "We all love your Mum, not matter how silly she is!" he said.
