Judy sat in the car, waiting for Nick. He really took forever in 7/11, for some reason. He promised it would take five minutes…that was thirty minutes ago. Lucky for him they were on break, otherwise she would've drove off and left him behind. She could only imagine the call she'd get from him.
She grinned at the thought of him. Best friends were certainly bliss.
"Hey Carrots, sorry, Officer Carrots," he teased as he hopped in. She rolled her eyes and shut down her phone, which had been opened to one of several snapshots of her and Nick. No need for him to see that she regularly looked over those. "Sorry I took so long, but I needed to grab a few things."
"I assumed so," she laughed, taking the lemonade that he'd gotten exactly as she wanted it: extra sugar. She noticed he took a very, very long time sipping his lemonade. Longer than usual. "You ok Nick?" She checked, suddenly paranoid that something was wrong.
"Fine!" he answered quickly as his whole body tensed. His answer set a nervous air in the car. "Uh, I was wondering…" he started playing with the collar of his uniform, which Judy took interest in noticing.
"Yeah?" She couldn't help giggling as she replied. Driving Nick mad was a bit more fun than it should've been, and she knew it. A sneaking suspicion grew up on her of what he was about to ask, and she inwardly brightened. He's trying to ask me…out?! She smiled wider than she ever had at the thought.
Suppressing the temptation to grin and throw her arms around him, she gave him a cool grin. "What is it Nick?"
Her voice was too sweet and too cool for Nick to take. "Uh, I just… I CAN'T DO THIS!" his voice went from jumpy to frustrated like that.
Judy flinched back at her partner, who was frantically scribbling on a notebook from the glove compartment. "Uh…are you ok?" she asked gently.
"Just…read…this!" He finally relaxed into a smile as he tore off the page and handed it to her. He allowed his shoulders slump back down and his eyes close, waiting for her to read the scratchy handwriting.
Judy, will you go out with me?
Judy smiled softly at the note in her hands. He really was so much sweeter than people knew. He tensed on the moment that she turned to face him, and he winced as if she'd already rejected him. He finally met her gaze and quickly added, "You don't have to, but we've known each other–"
She moved forward and planted a quick kiss on the side of his face. "I'd love to go out with you, Nick."
He turned to her with blushed cheeks and raised eyebrows, shock and disbelief masking his face. "Really? Why? You actually–why?" He was making absurd movements with his hands, as if trying to find out her motive for going to with him.
She giggled at his reaction. "Well, you're sweet, you're my best friend, you're hilarious and you know it, and…" she turned her airy smile into a genuine one as he stared at her. "…I really, really like you."
As red as his fur was, his blush was intense enough that she could plainly see it. He finally cracked a love-stricken smile and managed to reply, "I really like you too."
"Dumb fox. You didn't know I'd say yes?"
"Sly bunny. You knew what I was asking."
