Natsuki Kuga's birthday was coming up, but she wasn't that excited. She didn't like loud, crazy parties that much. She usually enjoyed stuff that was loud and nutty when it came to battling villains, but parties weren't her cup of tea. Despite being confident and cool when it came to being a hero she didn't feel like she even deserved a birthday.
In order to not get a birthday party she avoided telling her family and friends about it. She assumed that some of them would remember even if she said nothing about it, but she hoped that most of them would forget. She was going to be twenty soon. She jokingly said, "If nobody finds out about my birthday I can be nineteen forever."
Natsuki's parents knocked on her bedroom door. Natsuki sighed and said, "You can come in."
Natsuki's mom said, "We just remembered that your birthday is coming up."
Natsuki was secretly disappointed that her parents remembered her birthday. She said, "I don't want a birthday party so don't worry about it."
Natsuki's mom asked, "Why not?"
Natsuki answered, "I'm just not fond of parties. Plus my birthday is hardly worth celebrating. Please don't set up any kind of a party and don't get me any presents."
Natsuki's dad was excited about not having to spend any money. He said, "This is some of the best news that I've gotten all year. We'll save so much money. I haven't been so proud of my daughter in a long time."
Natsuki's mom asked, "Can we at least get a cake?"
Natsuki answered, "No thanks."
Natsuki's dad said, "We should get a cake, because I'm hungry."
Natsuki said, "I have a date with Shizuru to go to so I better hurry." Natsuki walked out.
After Natsuki left her mom asked, "Shouldn't we at least plan a small party?"
Natsuki's dad answered, "I don't think we should do that. Nasuki is modest and shy and that's something that we should respect. If she doesn't want any special attention on her birthday then we'll help her by giving her a pleasantly simple day."
Natsuki's mom said, "Okay. You're such a caring man."
Natsuki's dad replied, "And you're cool. Please excuse me for a few minutes." He went outside so he could do a victory dance. He was so happy that he didn't have to do any birthday planning.
Natsuki went to a nearby coffee shop and met up with Shizuru. Natsuki said, "Hi Shizuru."
Shizuru replied, "Hi sweetheart. How are you?"
Natsuki said, "Um, okay."
Shizuru replied, "We have to talk about next week."
Natsuki asked, "Why?"
Shizuru answered, "Your birthday's in a week."
Natsuki asked, "Do we have to talk about that?"
Shizuru smiled and said, "Of course we do. I have to make sure that you have the best possible birthday."
Natsuki replied, "I told my parents that I don't want a birthday party."
Shizuru responded, "I'm sure your dad's excited about that, but you deserve a birthday party."
Natsuki said, "I don't want a birthday party. Parties are loud, chaotic, and I'm not someone who earns so much attention."
Shizuru started playing with Natsuki's hair while saying, "You're the most lovely person that I've ever met so I want to celebrate your special day with you."
Natsuki said, "If I have a regular birthday party my friends will scream and throw cake at the walls and my dad will whine about money being wasted."
Shizuru replied, "Then I won't give you a normal birthday party. How about you just spend your birthday with me? They'll be no chaos, no crazy parties, and your dad's money won't be wasted."
Natsuki smiled and said, "Okay."
Shizuru replied, "You're already excited."
Natsuki said, "I don't really like celebrating my birthday, but I could never pass up on getting to spend a whole day with you."
Shizuru replied, "I love you so much."
Natsuki blushed and said, "I love you too."
Natsuki went home and walked to the living room. She said, "Instead of having a birthday party I'm going to spend the day with Shizuru."
Natsuki's mom replied, "Okay."
Natsuki said, "I need to get ready for bed. Goodnight."
After Natsuki walked to her room her mom asked, "Do you think that we should let Natsuki just be with Shizuru on her birthday?"
Natsuki's dad said, "She just wants a relaxing day. We have to respect her desire to have regular day on her birthday."
Natsuki's mom replied, "I guess this is for the best. She's become a lot more happy and optimistic about life thanks to Shizuru."
Natsuki's dad whispered, "I've become so much more happy and optimistic about life thanks to not having to spend any money on my daughter's birthday."
A week later it was Natsuki's birthday. Natsuki didn't want to dress fancy for her birthday so she wore a normal green t-shirt, blue pants, and a black jacket.
Natsuki went to the living room and saw that her dad was dancing around in excitement. Natsuki's mom said, "He's really glad about today being your birthday."
Natsuki's dad whispered, "The main thing that I'm excited about is saving money."
Shizuru knocked on the front door. Natsuki opened it and said, "Hi Shizuru. I'm ready to go. Goodbye Mom and Day."
Natsuki's mom said, "Have a great day."
Natsuki's dad said, "Don't spend too much money."
Natsuki and Shizuru went into Shizuru's car. Shizuru was wearing a yellow dress. Natsuki said, "You look really pretty."
Shizuru replied, "Thank you honey." Shizuru started driving.
Natsuki asked, "Where are we going?"
Shizuru answered, "Don't worry about it."
Natsuki said, "Not giving me any details is a good way to keep me worried."
Shizuru replied, "It's not going to be anything extreme so you don't need to be concerned. You worry about things too often."
Natsuki said, "I admit that I do worry a lot more than I want to."
Shizuru replied, "We're going to have a pleasant day."
Natsuki heard several nearby drivers complaining about traffic and said, "This isn't exactly pleasant."
Shizuru replied, "It's stereotypical of drivers to act like angry weirdos when it comes to traffic. When we get our destination things will be as quiet as an episode of Mr. Bean."
Natsuki said, "No offense, but Mr. Bean episodes can get pretty loud when it comes to the slapstick."
Shizuru responded, "I assure you that we're going to have a quieter time than that."
An hour later Shizuru parked her car and said, "We're at our destination."
Natsuki looked around and saw an empty beach. She asked, "Where did you take us to?"
Shizuru answered, "The beach."
Natsuki replied, "It doesn't look like a very popular beach."
Shizuru responded, "I accidentally found it when I was driving around one day. I noticed how little attention it had gotten. Since you like places that aren't very populated I thought that you would like it."
Natsuki smiled and said, "It looks nice."
Shizuru replied, "Lets get a bottle of soda and check the place out."
Natsuki said, "Alright."
Natsuki and Shizuru walked to a nearby soda machine and they each got one bottle. After that they started walking around the beach while holding hands.
Natsuki heard the sounds of the ocean. Shizuru asked, "Does the sound bother you?"
Natsuki answered, "No. The sounds that the ocean makes are better than other types of sounds. They remind me of the sound of my fan. It has a relaxing sort of pleasantness that I enjoy listening to."
Shizuru said, "Honey, there's something that I need to ask you."
Natsuki asked, "What's your question?"
Shizuru asked, "Why do you feel unworthy of having a birthday?"
Natsuki nervously said, "I don't wanna talk about it."
Shizuru replied, "Come on. You can trust me about anything that's on your mind."
Natsuki said, "Okay." She remained silent while thinking about how to word herself.
After a few minutes of silence Shizuru jokingly asked, "Is this a silent film?"
Natsuki smiled and said, "No." She paused with a more serious look on her face. She said, "I guess I feel like I don't deserve a birthday, because I've already gotten more than I deserve."
Shizuru asked, "What do you mean?"
Natsuki said, "I feel grateful, but also undeserving to have you as my girlfriend. You're such a great person that I feel like I haven't earned being with you."
Shizuru responded, "Don't ever say that sweetheart. Being with you is the biggest honor of my life. You and I were friends for years before we started dating. I was worried that you'd never like me as more than a friend and when you finally decided that you liked me it was the most magical moment of my life."
Natsuki cried tears of happiness and said, "Thank you Shizuru. You've given me the best birthday that I've ever had."
Shizuru smiled and responded, "That means I accomplished my goal."
Natsuki said, "You truly make my life better."
Shizuru asked, "Is there anything else that I can do for you?"
Natsuki blushed and said, "I could use a birthday kiss." Natsuki and Shizuru kissed.
Shizuru asked, "Do you still feel unworthy of having a birthday?"
Natsuki said, "No. However I'd rather just be with you than having a crazy party."
Shizuru replied, "Your dad would love to never have to spend money on birthday parties, but your mom and friends want to celebrate your birthday."
Natsuki said, "You're right. My birthday isn't a good excuse to be selfish."
Shizuru smiled and said, "Then I have an offer for you."
Natsuki asked, "What is it?"
Shizuru answered, "For your future birthdays you'll celebrate your birthday with family and friends the day before your birthday and it'll be just us on the day of your birthday."
Natsuki smiled and said, "Good plan. What about on your birthday?"
Shizuru answered, "We'll hangout together all day!" She sighed and said, "I get too excited when I think about the future."
Natsuki said, "Thank you for this wonderful day." Natsuki and Shizuru kissed again. They held hands on the way to the car while feeling excited for the next birthday.
