MORBiD Fascination

Misa had been told about it later.

She had come bouncing forth from her room in the Teitou Hotel, expecting to see Raito waiting at the door. Instead, she saw a teary-eyed Matsuda and a stony Mogi. The grin faded off her face—there was something in dear Motchi's eyes that unsettled her—and she carelessly brushed a flaxen strand of hair out of her eyes. "Hey," she cooed. "Where's Raito-kun?"

Matsuda wiped his nose with the sleeve of his jacket and turned away. Mogi stepped forward, put a large hand on her shoulder, and wheeled her back into the room in his usual silence.

She was told about it later. After everything had come to pass. Too late for her to help. Too late for stupid Misa, always messing up, to help out and save the one she loved most in the world. Too late to punish that stupid stupid Near for everything he did. Too late to berate Ryuk, too late to threaten him—too late, even, to make him fall in love with her, just so he could die.

Later.

Well, now it was much later, a year, in fact.

Misa's heart was locked in a cage, and had been since January 28th, 2010. The person who held the key to that cage, the key to setting Misa free, was Raito, and he was long gone, wandering around in mu, or whatever they did in Nothingness.

So, Misa decided that, in order to free her heart, she would have to carve it out herself.

Her choice did not frighten her. It would be easy, she figured, to just cut her heart away until there was nothing less and she could be free—and she could meet with Raito once more and he could give her back the key that she didn't need anymore.

Misa held a knife in one hand. She glanced down at it, turning it this way and that, fascinated by the way the light reflected off it.

The young woman, curious, pricked her finger to test the sharpness of the blade. A small, red bead of blood bubbled up from the tip of the digit and ran down, pooling in her palm. She smiled.

Raito…

And Misa held the knife up to her chest.
