John watches as Mary Campbell goes around the cafeteria, asking students to sign a petition to allow a Christmas dance. He watches as she flirts with a table of senior boys, bosses around a table of jocks, sweet talks the chess and chemistry clubs and giggles with the cheerleading squad.

Finally, it's John's turn and she hands him the petition with a smile.

"So if this petition works, will you go with me to the dance, Mary?" John asks as he signs his name.

"I'd love to," she answers and kisses him on the cheek. John breathes again and smiles.
