Sometimes he simply couldn't hear what someone was saying. Though Sasuke would fake, brush it off, or pretend to have ignored said speaker, the inner ear drummer was asleep in the canal.

Sometimes he heard all too much. Naruto didn't always know exactly what people were saying, but he heard it, and sometimes that was enough.

Sasuke never heard the strangled cries of his family. Never heard Itachi's foot falls.

Naruto always heard the villagers whispers, hollering in his sensitive ears. Always heard Kyuubi snicker.

And even now Sasuke couldn't hear Naruto's cries.

And even now Naruto can hear Sasuke's cries.
