Spoilers: Assuming that most of the Fourth season doesn't exist, Sam would still be at the Task Force but Jack would still be toast and Rachel wouldn't exist.

My Little Secret

VCTF

Christmas Eve

We're all here, except for one person, and the party doesn't seem the same without her. I smile and nod, talk to Grace and the rest of my team, but I find that my eyes always seem to stray to those elegantly decorated doors bearing our elite seal.

'Department of Justice; Violent Crimes Task Force' is what they say, split right down the middle by an unseen crack that suddenly widens as another group of people comes through the doors, bearing smiles for their friends and showing off their significant others.

Parties aren't her thing.

She used to like them, but recently she's been distant from the team; from myself. I don't like that feeling. I know the case we're working on is getting to her, but she hasn't let on how much. That's how she is. I sometimes think my own stubbornness got rubbed off on her during our years together. It wouldn't surprise me.

Suddenly, the doors open up, and there she is, with two other agents. All of them are carrying four big plastic bags of gifts, with Sam in the lead. She has the biggest smile I've ever seen on her face, and her sky blue eyes reflect her good mood. Everyone turns, and when they see the gifts, they all fall silent.

"Merry Christmas everyone," Sam says with one of those grins as her two helpers set the bags down on the floor. "There's a gift for all of you in here…I hope you all like what I got you."

"I'm sure they will, Sam," I say as everyone began rummaging through the bags for the gift with their name on it. Drawing her out of the way, I say to her gently, "Is this why you've been avoiding the team and I recently?" She blushes slightly and sheepishly smiles at me. I feel my heart rate begin to go up.

"Sorry, but I knew that if I spent a lot of time around you guys, something would get out. You forgive me?"

"Nothing to forgive," I say with a smile as everyone unwraps their gifts. Everyone likes what they got, of course, and Sam is the recipient of plenty of hugs during the night.

"Here you go, Bail," Sam says, handing me a present. "I hope you like it…I didn't really know what to get you, so I…improvised." With a grin, I open it up, and when I see what it is, I smile.

"It's perfect Sam…thank you."

The present that Sam gave me was good, but she already gave me the best present I could ever receive those many years ago when I first saw her at the Academy. For right now, though, that's my little secret.

Okay folks… All opinions are welcome, but don't make the flames too hot, because I'm only a rookie at this sort of thing. J
