Disclaimer: I know, I know, I don't own Shaman King. Please don't bring that up. It's very depressing.

A/n: Please review!!! Flame if you have to but please keep in mind that this is the first fanfic I've posted so it might not be so great! With that said, let's get on with the fanfic, shall we?

Too Late

Asakura Hao fixed his eyes on the full moon above him, his gaze never straying from its pale, silvery face. To a passerby, he might've seemed dead. He was sprawled over the rooftop, his normally well-groomed hair now fanned out behind him in long waves of back, his obsidian eyes were hollow and distant.

He sighed as he sat up to take in the scene before him. The Pache village stretched on for what seemed like an eternity and the buildings' occupants had long since turned out their lights and retired to bed. An eerie silence had fallen over the city, smoldering it like a thick blanket in the middle of summer.

It had been yet another day of feigning gleeful villainous, another day slaughtering all those who opposed him. But bloodshed was becoming increasingly tiresome and no longer brought him satisfaction. Not since he had met his younger twin.

Yoh was completely opposite of Hao, the white side of a yin yang sign. He looked for the best in people and always believed in second chances. Hao, however, killed anyone who failed to complete his orders and thought that all humans were rotten to the core. But Yoh's positive outlooks on life had begun to make him see things a little differently. He felt guilty after he killed and let a few of his servants' minor mistakes slip by. But most importantly, an emptiness had started to grow in his heart, like a part of him he once knew was now missing.

Hao shook his head as if to clear his mind. What was he thinking? He was Asakura Hao! He was cold and heartless and never failed to smile even as he watched people reduced to ashes in an inferno of his own making. Yet...wasn't he human as well? Didn't he share the same weaknesses, the same emotions as them? "No," he said aloud to himself. He wasn't weak and he wasn't bound by human emotions.

With another sigh, Hao flopped back down again, convinced he had gone insane. He was arguing with himself, for crying out loud! Wouldn't it just be easier to let go rather than make himself crazy over this? What was the point of trying to wipe out the entire human race if all he got was countless enemies and a trip to the insane asylum? Maybe he could become like Yoh and do nothing but sit around and be lazy all day. That did sound much more appealing than the latter.

Hao lowered his face to his hand wearily. No, he couldn't give up now. He'd gone too far. Too many people have had to sacrifice their lives for this cause for him not to go through with it.

Pushing aside his troubled thoughts, he looked back to the moon. "Yoh," Hao said to the night sky, "I can't change, no matter what you do or how badly I want to. One thousand years is too long, too much effort to be wasted. I'm sorry."

I'm sorry. The words echoed in his mind as Hao jumped off the roof and disappeared into the darkness, his side of the yin yang. I'm sorry...

* * *

Somewhere off in the Pache village Yoh rolled over and mumbled in his sleep. "I'm sorry too, Onii-chan," he whispered into his pillow before drifting off again.

The end! ^^

A/n: Pretty short, huh? So what did you think? Tell me please!!! I need to know!!!
