Fade in on Harry's first night at Hogwarts
Harry falls asleep etc
There was a scuffle by Ron's bed as the rat Scabbers wriggled out of the sheets. He ran quickly along the floor until he was halfway between the two beds. There he grew and changed until, standing where the rat should have been, there was a short, plump, dirty man. He took careful steps across the floor, some of his first in 11 years, and leaned on the bedside table of Harry Potter. The small table was bare but for round spectacles and a wand. The man that used to be Scabbers the Rat picked up the wand and twisted it in his fingers, relishing the moment when he could finally do as his master wanted. He smiled manically as he pointed the wand at the sleeping boy and said, not too loudly
"Avada Kedavra."
The spell shot out in the form of green light, waking the other boys sleeping nearby. But before they had ignited their lamps the wand had clattered to the floor and Scabbers was back under Ron Weasley's four poster bed.
